Amazing adventures of the DID girl!

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, a delightfully fresh and fulfilling blast from the glorious 2D platformer past, is available 66% off on GOG.com. That's only $4.99 for the next 24 hours!

One of them is a perky blonde, always cheerful and smiling. Looking at her you would imagine that she makes her grandma proud. The other one is a feisty redhead with an attitude and punky style. This one is the kind of girl your grandma warned you about. This good girl/bad girl duo call themselves the Giana Sisters. But here's the kicker. They are actually the same person. Imagine that. If this isn't the most prominent illustration of the dissociative identity disorder in video games, than I don't know what is. Giana's split personality makes her experience two very different worlds, each with its very distinctive mood. Even the music she hears in her head changes on a whim. Life must be difficult for a platform game character with that sort of condition. Would you kindly help Giana along her way through her twisted dreams?

In Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, the split personality of the main character makes up for some very interesting game mechanics. The ability to shift her from one reality to another lies under your fingertips, so you can switch the worlds you are traversing at any given moment. Some obstacles that seem overwhelming in one plane of existence, won't give Giana much trouble in the other. Combine that with some clever level design and beautiful storybook-like graphics and what you get is one of the cutest and smartest platformer games that graced our screens in quite some time.

Guide the heroine through the meanders of her split-personality in Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, for only $4.99, until Thursday, February 14, at 10:59AM GMT.

lowyhong: Not a fan of FPS games in general unless they can be played with the controller, like Gears of War. I prefer RPGs like Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star. Will System Shock 2 work with an X360 controller?
Gears of War is a third-person shooter, mate. As for your question about SS2, I am unaware of the answer. I have a funny feeling it won't, and besides, the game was designed to be controlled with a keyboard and mouse.

BlueKronos: Too bad this will be missed by some in favor of some other things, but for those who have played it already how does it compare game mechanic wise to say Braid? Or that other game where you switched between light/dark areas and the name escapes me currently?
I like it better than Braid. For Braid, you aren't generally in much danger; it's mostly just puzzles. Giana Sisters, on the other hand, has much more interesting and varied level design. (It's also a lot longer.) It's more challenging for sure, but I also found it substantially more rewarding and also more fun to play. It's also a gorgeous game with an ingenious soundtrack, which doesn't hurt.

It's very fast-paced. The closest comparison I can think of is Sonic the Hedgehog, or Tiny Toons. If you want a taste of the game, you can check out the demo here:

i know, i'm beginning to think steam somehow feels threatened by gog. that's too much of a coincidence.

I like Steam for some things like coordinating what multiplayer games are being played, but personally if I can find a game here I'd rather get it on GoG. DRM free! Oftentimes if I'm interested in grabbing a game on steam (and they do have some good sales) I'll check GoG first just to see if it's available.

And thanks for your opinions on how it plays bevinator and lowyhong. I think I'll have to give the demo a try, I like action games and puzzlers both, but depends on the mix as to whether it's worth it for me.

mrking58: No 2 thirds is 67% not 66%

TheEnigmaticT: Sure, but you can round down. Clearly, we have.
Perhaps he can't.

Zelda: A Link to the Past? Metroid Prime 2? Soul Reaver?

Good thoughts but not the ones I was thinking of, it was a xbox live arcade game where you toggled your environment from white to black and back again, where the toggle changed which was the open space and which was the solid matter. Interesting concept, Soul Reaver definitely used some dimension shift areas to bypass obstacles in it's puzzles. Zelda not so much, the two worlds were similar and I guess you could drop from dark to light to solve a few things, but don't remember it being much of a gameplay mechanic as a way to get a few extra heart containers or what not. Having not played Metroid Prime 2 don't know how it used dimensional or light/dark shifting in gameplay.

mrking58: Why 66% off?

What a random number
For shits and giggles?

I think 65% off would just be stingy in this case, being Valentines and all...

I think I've derailed the thread for long enough. I confess I was just trolling (as I did with Thief 2), though I thought it was very obvious. Lurk more on the forums, you'll know I (and most of the community) revere LGS.

Hm there's not much in the way of puzzles here. It's a straightforward point-to-point game, while you try to collect as many diamonds as possible without dying too much. Most of the secret paths are quite obvious. The fun is in performing manoeuvres as you navigate your way through each level.

To be honest I thought that he realised and played along, albeit a bit too seriously.

Not much of a platform gamer myself, but the game did look interesting and with the promo I said why the hell not.
Glad I did! Only played a couple of levels so far, but what I've seen it's great. Smooth gameplay, excellent graphics and I really like the switching mechanic. I hope I like the rest as much (or more!) and with the sale it's practically a steal.

Me neither, and funnily enough, I knew about the Kickstarter but was unimpressed by what I saw. Never expected this to be one of my favourites of 2012. I also think the soundtrack really helped a lot to get players into the mood. Fantastic compositions, especially the boss music.
