2011 has been a fantastic year for GOG.com, let's make it even better and make the last push to achieve the 6 million unique downloaded games milestone.

During our presentation at the CD Projekt Fall 2011 Conference we've shared some numbers that show how successful this year was for GOG.com, all that was possible thanks to you - our great community. One of the big milestones we'd like to celebrate with you is the 6 million unique downloaded games! Help us achieve this number and we'll launch a time-limited special offer for all GOG.com users!

Note that when we say "unique games downloaded," that means redownloading games that you have already downloaded before won't increment the counter.

When the counter on the main page of the website hits 6 million, two exciting things will happen. First off, the lucky user who downloaded our 6 millionth unique game will receive everything that's currently in the catalog, absolutely free! Secondly, everyone who has an account on GOG.com will be able to download Broken Sword: Shadow of The Templars Director’s Cut for free, thanks to Sir Charles Cecil and Revolution Software. The offer will be valid only for 48 hours starting from hitting the milestone, so be sure to check GOG regularly or follow us on and [url=https://www.facebook.com/gogcom]Facebook. Let's get cracking to unlock this achievement as soon as possible - it's all in your hands now!

DrIstvaan: Wait, wouldn't it be 6M unique games bought in that case? TheEnigmaticT and the news post make it sound like it's only a "download" if you download it.

TheEnigmaticT: Cook and I have been told different things, apparently. Let me figure out who's right and then get back to you.
Yes please, I'm still confused about whether it's a purchase or an actual download that counts.
avatar
TheEnigmaticT: I think i see you trying to be sneaky (wait until almost 6 million and then go crazy in the downloader. :P)
avatar
Lexor: Well, tell me, who will not try to do that?

Also, because you mentioned it: did you mean only downloads done with use of GOG downloader counts?
They mentioned that multi-part downloads only count once, and since the GOG Downloader doesn't deal with multiple parts, I assume that means direct downloads count as well.
I wanted to redownload my collection ( 158 titles ) on Saturday's afternoon .
Well the counter seems to increase by one every 4 seconds. So it doesn't give a good indication of how many games have actually been downloaded/bought by GOGers. This also means that anyone hoping to jump into the sweet spot and get the entire catalogue would have the same chance as everyone else. Plus, imagine sorting almost 400 games. Almost makes losing seem like the better alternative.

Good point on the counter. Still I have to wonder if a lot of people are going to hold back from downloading things until the faux counter gets closer to the magic number...

Ok, we managed to clear all confusions. So if you already bought the game, but haven't downloaded it yet, and start downloading it now this counts towards the 6 million unique game downloads. So till you start downloading this game it won't count. Hope that clarifies everything.

with the Broken Sword thing - I'm assuming that it means 'add to your shelf for ever and ever' for free within the 48hrs not just a download link that then gets taken away again - right?
I see a massive DDoS on the horizon...
6 unique game? Did you mean 6 millions?

I think if you guys kill the poor db, it defaults to a systematic increment policy. It is *supposed* to go up realtme, but itcould be lagging a bit.

You are correct.

Like with all the gifts from GOG in the past, the whole things seems a bit random. One of the lucky 1M unique visitors will get the catalogue, GOG will publish a short interview with him/her and everyone else will hate their guts out, until a new promo/release/publisher gets announced. Thus goes the circle of life at GOG.

It's not that hard. Takes a fair amount of room though (just over 300G for the installers and extras etc.)
