2011 has been a fantastic year for GOG.com, let's make it even better and make the last push to achieve the 6 million unique downloaded games milestone.

During our presentation at the CD Projekt Fall 2011 Conference we've shared some numbers that show how successful this year was for GOG.com, all that was possible thanks to you - our great community. One of the big milestones we'd like to celebrate with you is the 6 million unique downloaded games! Help us achieve this number and we'll launch a time-limited special offer for all GOG.com users!

Note that when we say "unique games downloaded," that means redownloading games that you have already downloaded before won't increment the counter.

When the counter on the main page of the website hits 6 million, two exciting things will happen. First off, the lucky user who downloaded our 6 millionth unique game will receive everything that's currently in the catalog, absolutely free! Secondly, everyone who has an account on GOG.com will be able to download Broken Sword: Shadow of The Templars Director’s Cut for free, thanks to Sir Charles Cecil and Revolution Software. The offer will be valid only for 48 hours starting from hitting the milestone, so be sure to check GOG regularly or follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Let's get cracking to unlock this achievement as soon as possible - it's all in your hands now!

PraetorianWolfie: So unique game downloads counts the game extras or multiple game files or is it one download per distinct game?
Extras don't count and multiple game files are count as one unique game download.
avatar
yyahoo: I'm confused. Are we talking about the downloading of previously purchased games for the first time or actual new purchases? Heck, I've got 50+ games that I've purchased but haven't downloaded yet. If it's the former, I guess I should wait to download anything until the counter gets near 6,000,000 and then go on a sudden downloading spree. I suspect, however, that this is merely worded in a confusing way and that this is really about the 6,000,000th *purchase*. Clarification from GOG would be nice.
If you already bought the game, but haven't downloaded it yet, this counts towards the 6 unique game downloads.

GOG.com: the lucky user who downloaded our 6 millionth unique game will receive everything that's currently in the catalog, abslutely free!
avatar
Lexor: Will that be the person who starts 6M download OR the one who ends his/her download successfully as 6M one? In other words what counts: start or finish?
I think i see you trying to be sneaky (wait until almost 6 million and then go crazy in the downloader. :P)

However, I believe it is started downloads.

Cook: If you already bought the game, but haven't downloaded it yet, this counts towards the 6 unique game downloads.
avatar
DrIstvaan: Wait, wouldn't it be 6M unique games bought in that case? TheEnigmaticT and the news post make it sound like it's only a "download" if you download it.
Cook and I have been told different things, apparently. Let me figure out who's right and then get back to you.

Ok, we managed to clear all confusions. So if you already bought the game, but haven't downloaded it yet, and start downloading it now this counts towards the 6 million unique game downloads. So till you start downloading this game it won't count. Hope that clarifies everything.

de_Monteynard: Well the counter seems to increase by one every 4 seconds. So it doesn't give a good indication of how many games have actually been downloaded/bought by GOGers. This also means that anyone hoping to jump into the sweet spot and get the entire catalogue would have the same chance as everyone else. Plus, imagine sorting almost 400 games. Almost makes losing seem like the better alternative.
I think if you guys kill the poor db, it defaults to a systematic increment policy. It is *supposed* to go up realtme, but itcould be lagging a bit.

Fever_Discordia: with the Broken Sword thing - I'm assuming that it means 'add to your shelf for ever and ever' for free within the 48hrs not just a download link that then gets taken away again - right?
You are correct.

wormholewizards: 6 unique game? Did you mean 6 millions?
Yes, I meant 6 MILLION :)
avatar
kavazovangel: Is that just a useless incrementation script set to update at 3.25 seconds?
The counter, that you see on the frontpage, does represent the actual downloads number. For the purpose of the animation we had to do some simplification of the real data (witch is too large), but the counter you see isn't "off" for more then a couple of seconds.
avatar
Lexor: I hope so, BUT it is NOT similar offer. In the past you were getting game for free. This time (if I understand correctly) you will be able to download BS for free during next two days - that's all. BS will not be on your list of purchased games.
avatar
crazy_dave: I don't think that is accurate. After all with a DRM-free gaming site, there is not much distinction between "downloaded" and "on the game shelf". Obviously I can't say for certain, but it wouldn't make much sense to me. More likely it is similar to what they did for Jagged Alliance - it was offered free for a limited time.

EDIT: Ninja'd by the T awhile ago and Fujek now. :)
Let me clarify this: for 48 hours, we will drop the price of Broken Sword to "free". If you add it to your cart and check out, you will not pay for it and It will remain on your shelf forever. If you don't add it to your cart yourself during those 48 hours, though, it will not be yours for free.

Is that clear?

Kunovski: yay, they change the tempo from time to time? :D
If by "they" you mean all of gog.com users, than yes, "they" change the counter by downloading games. If you're talking about any of gog.com staff, than no, we just sit around watching the counter go, waiting until it hits 6M.
avatar
Kunovski: no, I meant the script, this line in particular:
downloadsCounterTempo
:D
but I'm no programmer, I don't know how the scripts works... it's pretty complex!
Let me explain then. The tempo represents how often gog.com users download games. We calculate it by frequently sampling the database of all downloads (because it's to big to use directly in the counter, we don't want our frontpage to weigh a few gigabytes ;)). You see? It's not that complex! :)

taczillabr: Thanks for the recommendation, orcish. Although Majin is PS3 and 360 only, I'll look into it...

I just said that in the past there were way more games focused on a good story. Also I'd like more Heavy Rain-like games to be released, more interaction options.

Ni no Kuni for PS3 might end being good, too.
avatar
orcishgamer: Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is good too, though I really hated the chick at the beginning of the story (there's plot holes as well, but the gameplay and the acting really hold it up).

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow was good, but it's really hard and I'm not sure even their easiest mode makes it accessible.

I agree, I'd love more good games with great stories, though:)
avatar
SirCabbage: So there is no, replacement gift for those who already OWN broken sword like you used to do? damn. This was the first givaway I already owned the gift, and its the first one there isnt a replacement for owning it already
avatar
orcishgamer: It's not really a gift per se, it's a promo, the promo price just happens to be "Free" instead of 2.99 or whatever.

I own it too and don't regret paying for it. I'm glad everyone else will be able to get it. The hot spots everyone seems to hate so much makes it pretty accessible for the non-Adventure gamers out there.
I will confess to being a bit puzzled by that statement; we are giving you guys a free game and paying download costs and what all out of pocket. How is that not a gift?

EDIT: fixing stupid typos. Composing forum posts on a tablet is not always wise before you've had your morning caffeine. :P

TheEnigmaticT: (...)we are giving you guys a free game and paying download costs and what all out of pocket. How is that not a gift?
avatar
Fujek: It could be seen as promotion in the way that it might provide incentive to get part two and three of the series for those that get the first gifted and enjoy the game.
That said, I doubt that orcishgamer meant to degrade the very kind GOG offer, but rather tried to argue why there's no 'replacement' if somebody already got the game.
Personally, I really hope to grab it and am quite glad about the offer (and am going to bite my own rear end if my Internet fails at that time).
Well, you only have to put it in your cart and checkout with it; actually downloading your "purchase" can wait until your Internet isn't borked.

TheEnigmaticT: tablet (...) morning caffeine
avatar
Fujek: *grabs tablet and hands coffee*
Here, let me hold that for you while you drink your coffee. Electronics and conductive liquids usually don't mix well!
*runs off and tries to steal tablet*
I will warn you: several of my coworkers have tried that. To discourage them, I no longer shoot to wound. :P

Taleroth: I'm in that position as well. As a sign of my sheer indignant outrage, I will post a frowny face.

...
I can't bring myself to do it.
As a result of the fact that Broken Sword is a well-known franchise, it has already sold pretty well, so we would have had to negotiate two completely seperate giveaways to cover all of the people who already own the game. Not all of our partners are as awesome as Revolution Software, who was kind enough to say, "Sure, you can give that game away for 48 hours." We wanted to make sure to reward them by keeping attention on them for that cool move, so we can't give away a second game to all of you guys who are already owners of BS1.

Sorry about that!
avatar
Fujek: That gets me to wonder how you're going to see who initiated the concrete 6 millionth download if you can not even generate the number on the fly.
Funny mystical magic you're yielding there ;)
We have a log of all downloads that happened from the begging of gog.com, so after th 6th millionth download occurs we will be able to go back and get that users account details. The same way that now we can see who was the 4th millionth downloader or the 1st millionth downloader.
