ri_oh: No luck. Still crashes at the grey screen. I also found this on another older post, but it didn't work :

set s_milesdriver "software"
set r_ext_compress_textures"0"
set r_picmip "1"
set r_colorbits "16"
set r_texturebits "16"

I tried installing it to C:/Games, as well as trying to run it off the disc as opposed to a full install. Even fooling around with the compatibility modes, the game just won't run :( . I don't think there's anything wrong with the disc. Damn shame. Any other ideas? Otherwise I guess i'll just have to hope this comes to GoG one day.
Sorry to hear you're still having problems. :(

If you're curious about the integrity of your files, here's a list of md5sums for my working install of fakk2 patched to v1.02:

jamyskis: This is fundamentally the same problem, but it sounds like the ForceWare drivers aren't recognising the game to automatically apply the OpenGL extension limit.

Try this:

Open up your FAKK 2 game directory, go into the "FAKK" directory, load up config.cfg in Notepad.

Add this to the bottom of the config file:
seta r_allowExtensions 1

Save the config file. Try the game again.

There used to be a way to manually limit the number of extensions that the NVIDIA drivers reported from the ForceWare config window, but it seems that's no longer possible without major tweaking.

Well there's another way to solve that crash, what you have to do is to go to the game's CD and look for the folder "install", get in there and go to the folder "fakk". There you'll see 5 folders :"deu", "enu", "esp", "fra", "ita". Copy the file (named pak1.pk3) from one of those folders depending in which language you have installed the game (if you have installed the game in english, copy the file that lies inside of the folder "enu") to where you have installed the game; look for the folder fakk and paste it inside of it. For example: C:\Games\Heavy Metal fakk 2\fakk
I hope this help you! And sorry if my English is not that good, I'm not an English speaker xD
This happened to me too but found this was because I put it on the highest screen resolution. Put it on a lower resolution and all is well
Heavy Metal Fakk 2 was great and I hope to see it on GOG one day.
Just a little promo video with Julie Strain : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLRWuuH2AfA&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Pity that the movie was kinda meh, except for a select few scenes of course ;)
Original Heavy Metal film was way better
