Crosmando: It would really be nice to Project id on GOG, there's that huge id Software Pack on steam, but it honestly looks like a bit of a mess, plus there's the obviously steamworks DRM.

PMIK: But if you have the .wad files and zDoom then it is DRM free

I grabbed that pack during the summer sale. It's a great deal. Not sure why you say its a mess. It's pretty much got every id game you'd want

Otherwise for maps that need limit removing I load up PrBoom or Chocolate DOOM.

Good. Even a fairly poor machine should run them well in Dosbox.

jamyskis: The laugh ot it was that the first copy of Doom I played was the PlayStation version. As it was blacklisted here until last year, PC copies were harder to come by for a kid in the 1990s, and I chanced upon a copy of the PS1 version Final Doom at a flea market, so I'm still used to playing it with a PS1 joypad :-)

Worked surprisingly well too.

There's a free fan-game called DoomRL (Doom Roguelike) which I would recommend, good fun.

The best "vanilla" Doom experience you could have on a modern system is with the original DOS version running under DOSBox :-P

Models are looking great. Thanks for the link. I'd wish the soldiers were a little more "bulky" though, instead of lean and mean :D

There is a zDoom update released today. Quote: " ZDoom 2.6.1 is now available. This is primarily a bugfix release for 2.6.0, however it contains one breaking change: Voxels are now rotated 90 degrees to match their orientation in Slab6. There are also a few minor new features."

Sadly Doomsday still is not Boom-compatible, it doesn't have Decorate support, and so on. So for vanilla levels it's ok, but for other wads it's not cool.

Well, the Steam releases of the older id classics (and other games using their engines) are using DosBox so I'm quite sure that they are DRM free. Even if they're not: like someone else already mentioned - the most important part are the WAD files and once you have them you can pretty much do whatever you want, import them into the fan-made engine of your choice or even into the official Doom 95 (I used to download the Shareware version of Doom 95 and just insert my original WAD files from the DOS release into its folder but now I usually play the original DOS versions).

And considering this whole topic: I find it kinda ridiculous to use mouse controls for Doom. It's basically a 2D game and works perfectly with keyboard only.

Their skins looks better than the models themselves. That said, I'd still change details on the skins. The best model so far is the Doomguy, the worst is the demon.

Anyway, I believe it's a great initiative.
