comradegarry: Bioshock
I love the setting and story but I couldn't stand the game play; it just didn't feel right being a horror fps game where your shooting pretty much everything that moved. I wanted to explore rapture more! :(
I completely agree. The story of Bioshock is an illustration of how terrible violence is and the awful consequences of unlimited power. The gameplay is all about how much fun violence is and how great it is to have unlimited power to shoot, bludgeon, torture, and set people on fire.
Had trouble thinking of what to reply to this topic, then it hit me:

Beyond Two Souls Spoiler Free Review

Ugh, great idea for a game marred by strict limitations. I think I forgot to mention in the review that the game has that "illusion of choice" feeling where no matter what choices you're given you end up with the same results in the same situations etc.

Brutal Legends, Overlord or any action game that is also an RTS in third person. It's decent action hack and slash marred by imprecise camera controls which makes moving your units for the RTS elements harder then need be.

montcer9012: By my own experience, Singularity. I feel the game idea and concept is very good! And interesting, even to create a franchise. And who would think the contrary with a introduction like this!?

Sadly, the gameplay and the way the history develops makes you get bored. Is like the game need something more to bright among others FPS.

darthspudius: Deus Ex. Great story etc but really shit game play.
avatar
montcer9012: Totally agree with you, guys. Is sad what turns in TES Online. Could be better Skyrim with online mod so people can complete quest together; kinda like Diablo.

About Deus Ex, i didn't play first games, I just played the last one and damn, how boring it was. Nevertheless, I want to try the first game since has been told it is the better.

HiPhish: - Planescape: Torment -
It's not a role-playing game, it's a point&click adventure with tacked-on game mechanics. It would be a nice adventure game, but all the RPG mechanics do is just slow it down with pointless nonsense.

- Hitman - (1 & 2 at least)
In Thief you want to remain undetected and slip past enemies, but in Hitman you often have to put on a disguise and hide in plain sight.
avatar
montcer9012: Mmmm, I haven't played PST, but hope those elements you pointed did not make the game boring because i was thinking to get it :(

About Hitman hahahaha, yeah I understand you. First Hitman series, even Contracts, the sthealth mode was so rudimentary, hard to escape like a true Silent Assassin even if you own that rep in the game; there was always something that does not fit well with the stealth mode. Thanks too all divinities it gets better with Bloodmoney and finally Absolution.

ZFR: Half Life: Blue Shift

montcer9012: Yeah, no words needed about it; kinda breaks the joy of HL and Opposing Force. By the way, I found Opposing Force and UpLink demo like the most immerse atmosphere on first saga; lots of action!
Good god, if you thought Human Revolution was boring you're not going to like the original much. Especially considering the game play for Human Revolution was a huge game play improvement over the first two.
E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy.

A clusterfuck of ideas all mashed together with no thought put into it afterwards.

Urnoev: Gothic 3.

A huge (and when I say huge, I mean huge) world to explore, without any loading screens.
Really, there are none. Houses are open to the world and can be entered, you can walk from any point to any other point of the map.

But! The game was rushed to release by the publisher, okay. But even that cannot explain all the horrible bugs this game had. There are so many. Playing version 1.00, you're just going mad.
No there are many patches by the community, the most recent one being 1.75.14. And it eliminates most bugs. But the game still doesn't run smoothly, no matter how powerful your computer is.
This!

+ Ultima - Ascension
Same reasons

And Black'n'White because of the total lack of freedom even to skip the tutorial. or choose any titan you want from the start instead of having to install DLCs and being stuck with one of the animals for the beginning to only ditch them later for another one you wanted to have from the start.
Wasn't this game about the freedom of the player?

Evolva
I still don't really get the execution of the evolution mechanic, it seems totally random.

Sacrifice
Actually a bloody excellent and beautiful game but why is it so damn hard?

Evoland
Superficial, bland and short with a nice idea behind it and literally nothing more.

Lionheart
Fallout with knights? Yeah... oh, turns into a grindfest with the worst balance ever seen? Too bad...

The Void
Let's make an artsy game about colors and hot women, why not?
Let's make it so hard that nobody is able to get far and see if they make mods for easier difficulty settings (Normal and Easy) only a fraction of our customers will get to know about so that nobody will care about this game and it will be practically gifted from the stores in their "we want to get rid of it"-staples right away!

Every tower defense game after Plants vs. Zombies 1.
Enough, ENOUGH they only get worse and more boring, stop it, make other kinds of games, puzzle platformers if you lack inspiration and it has to be for heaven's sake!

Dragon Age: Origins was not bad, I liked it. But I mention it here, because as the title of a game suggests, I was expecting WAY more dragons in the game. Skyrim has many - it could be called Dragon Age. Other than that, it's a good game.

Well to be fair, HiPhish doesn't quite seem to understand (no offense intended, I just don't know how to put it more politely, HiPhish) what actually made PST tick for most people who played it, so you at least owe it to yourself to try. I'm not saying you're actually going to like the game tho, it is highly flawed. Despite of that, it repeatedly makes its way into lists of best RPGs ever, so ... Think on that for a bit :D

Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy, obviously. The gameplay concept as exemplified by the first scenes in the diner promises an exciting cinematic game based on choices (maybe a bit like what the more recent Telltale games would like to be, but more convincing in quality to me). Then the "Simon Says" QTE mechanics are introduced and story and gameplay get more and more silly and annoying.

Black & White also crossed my mind. I think the more fundamental flaw of that game was that everything was moulded into one of two alignments. There was never a neutral or ambiguous option, the outcome of an action was either deemed good or evil (regardless of your own beliefs). Being a good god thus always meant: dramatically expand your settlements, collect massive amounts of food and wood yourself and constantly use healing and water spells. Your alignment also never had any effect on the game anyway, it didn't have a lasting impact. Good gods won missions by expansion and labour, evil gods by impression and warfare. In the end, the 'freedom' was superficial at best once you chose a path (which the game pretty much forced you to do).

I was just debating game as one to try. It seemed fun from the demo at least but if it didn't develop beyond that I can see where that would pose a huge problem.

It was a poorly executed concept. Aside from that, it was just extremely repetitive and long-winded halfway through. I don't think I ever finished the game, I always stopped playing in the final mission. Godus was meant to be a spiritual successor of Populous and Black & White, but it pretty much has the same flaws: shallow gameplay and excessive repetition, despite that Molyneux promised us the world.
Betrayer comes to mind as well. It promises a horror heavy stealthy action game in a unique setting with striking visuals. That sounds all well and good but the actual way everything is implemented just makes it sort of tedious. The inability to clear an area, enemies that only have two modes: blind/deaf mode and superpower hearing/sight mode, predictable "random" occurrences, constant backtracking and the brittleness of the main character all serve to say "we had some great ideas but no idea how to implement them". It's not a bad game but the positive ideas probably would've worked far better in a Penumbra/Amnesia-esque game than what Betrayer actually is.

DieRuhe: I don't know, but when "Set out on a cross-country journey to win back the love of your life" is the first thing written, what were you expecting? Your one major point is the whole point/plot of the game!! :-)

Just making conversation, but your post seems a little contradictory - "so interested in the game's concept... an amazing concept" - and then you argue that the very concept is what killed it. "forced to chase after your ex even though I hate the idea." ???
I guess the fact being that, well, there was the complete and utter lack of emotional attachment to said ex, making it hard to be sympathetic to the main character. Also the circumstances in which he lost his book deal kind of annoyed me as an aspiring writer as myself.

I believe I deserve a self control award for not going batshit insane on nerd rage over that statement.
