I play this game for over 3 years now and what Outerdementor said is true, you can achieve a great many things in it but it all takes time.

This game is very complex (compared to other mainstream mmo's) in almost every aspect so it is not everyone, but that's the price to pay for the countless possibilities you have there.
For a new player it might be a little overwhelming but you are not left alone. There are many player-run organizations that specialize in introducing new players to EVE.

So my advice is, launch the 14- day trial, get through the tutorial, and join a training corp like:
