Artificial planet, real trouble.

Anachronox, a colorful Sci-Fi role-playing game with turn-based combat system resembling Japanese RPG titles, a cast of memorable characters, and an amazing mysterious story, is available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $2.39 for the next 24 hours.

Sly Boots, probably the most unlucky private investigator in the history of the universe. Always the first to get the beating, always the last to get the girl. Someone with a trace of self-preservation instinct would have considered a career change. A hot-dog-and-zurhmax-beer booth in some relatively peaceful corner of northern Anachronox would be a much safer (and probably more profitable) business than a detective agency in the middle of the crime-ridden slum. So yes, some people might call Sylvester "Sly Boots" Bucelli a fool. The universe, however, needs that exact type of fools. Someday, when fools are in short supply, there will be no one to stand up to odds and save the whole of existence from destruction. Someday, but not today.

Anachronox combines jRPG mechanics, cinematic storytelling, and incredibly compelling Sci-Fi setting in one fun and memorable game. The story brings back the memories of space-opera classics, splices them with neo-noir detective novels, and adds a hefty dash of cyberpunk. Anachronox, the artificial planet of unknown origin that serves as the game's setting, is so full of mysteries that it could easily keep a legion of investigators busy for a century. All you get, though, is one beat-down sleuth and his small squad of misfits, dragged into a chain of events that are way over their head. Prepare for one of the most amazing stories ever told in computer RPGs!

Are you ready for a radical Sci-Fi adventure in the strangest corner of the universe? Get Anachronox for only $2.39 on GOG.com. The promo lasts until Tuesday, March 19, at 10:59AM GMT.
you said it started with a U
Bought it a while back, played it for a while, really liked it but got busy and forgot about it :p
I should get back to it. I should get back to a lot of games that suffered a similar fate.
Owned it during last Christmas sales.
Tried to play but it gave me motion sickness within 5 mins of starting, and got mild headaches for about 5 days.
Get this!
its over rated !the game is bad
Was looking at this for some time, at that price I just had to grab it... despite some backlog.

Bapabooiee: This probably makes a certain enigmatic 'T' quite happy.

Also, can anyone throw some gospel for this game at me? I tried playing it a number of months ago, but just couldn't get into it. Maybe I didn't play it long enough for the story to open-up and hook me -- which I've heard is pretty compelling, and also quite funny -- but the combat in the game felt really clunky and mediocre, and I wasn't feeling most of the humor in the game. I believe I gave-up on the game after about 2 or 3 hours in since I wasn't really enjoying it very much, and didn't think the story would make-up for its mechanical faults.

Would anyone suggest that I should've kept at it and/or try it again?
The humour really warms up after you leave Anachronox for the first time and start encountering the ridiculous NPCs. The most successful humour revolves around Democratus (quite literally, too!), and there are episodes like the one that takes place in a corny superhero comic book, a ship stranded in space, and many others. Some of the mini-games for character skill activation are hilarious when you think about them. There are many moments that made me laugh out loud, which few games accomplish. The combat is bad, but fortunately there isn't so much of it. You can even hold the "fast forward" button to skip the gratuitously lengthy combat animations. The overarching story is a bit convoluted, but it keeps you going. The main thing to focus on are the character and their interactions.
Hmmm.... Still on the fence on this one. Can anyone tell me how long it is?
Wow. A promo and I actually have money for it, BUT, I keep hearing mixed reviews on this. Let me throw down a few peramiters and I'll leave it to the wonderfull forum members to give me a thumbs up or down.

First, I like RPGs but I like to keep character builds somewhat simple and limited in terms of party members. I don't want to spend 2 hours doing an entire character evaluation for 5 or 6 people everytime someone levels up. I'm sorry BG, while a great game, I got tired of monitoring the progression and inventory of THAT many people.

Second, I DON'T like Jap anime. I find it annoying and trite.

Finally, I LOVE bizarre settings, strange people, and a sense of humor.

Should I get this or hold out for something else?

Quite long if you want to do all the sidequests and unlock all master skills for characters.
Nevermind, mrking58 just solved my dillema :) Thanks a lot dude !

Character building is almost non-existent here. When your characters level-up, they gain a certain amount of HP and other, so you don't have to do anything, which doesn't matter at all, since most enemies are level-scaled. The only noticeable facet of progression is in how advanced your weapons are, and each character can wield only a certain type of weapons, usually unique to them. As far as the choice of current followers is concerned (the limit is two at any given time), it boils down to personal taste and affinities. Each NPC is equially capable of handling him/her/it/themselves in combat.

I think for 2.39 you might have just convinced me. I have 24 hours to ponder and TBH I just picked up Trine as a giveaway and I'm kind of too in love with it to consider anything else right now. Before I go, is Anachronox a 3 member party? I think that's what I read on Gamespot.

Yep, there are three members in your party at any given time (the main character is obligatory), but there's about a dozen available party members that you collect as you progress. They are usually gathered in a hub (like the Sender Station) so you can exchange party members when you like, but it often involves a lot of backtracking, which is my major gripe with this game. It would be much better if you could exchange party members "on the fly" like in KotOR.
