Artificial planet, real trouble.

Anachronox, a colorful Sci-Fi role-playing game with turn-based combat system resembling Japanese RPG titles, a cast of memorable characters, and an amazing mysterious story, is available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $2.39 for the next 24 hours.

Sly Boots, probably the most unlucky private investigator in the history of the universe. Always the first to get the beating, always the last to get the girl. Someone with a trace of self-preservation instinct would have considered a career change. A hot-dog-and-zurhmax-beer booth in some relatively peaceful corner of northern Anachronox would be a much safer (and probably more profitable) business than a detective agency in the middle of the crime-ridden slum. So yes, some people might call Sylvester "Sly Boots" Bucelli a fool. The universe, however, needs that exact type of fools. Someday, when fools are in short supply, there will be no one to stand up to odds and save the whole of existence from destruction. Someday, but not today.

Anachronox combines jRPG mechanics, cinematic storytelling, and incredibly compelling Sci-Fi setting in one fun and memorable game. The story brings back the memories of space-opera classics, splices them with neo-noir detective novels, and adds a hefty dash of cyberpunk. Anachronox, the artificial planet of unknown origin that serves as the game's setting, is so full of mysteries that it could easily keep a legion of investigators busy for a century. All you get, though, is one beat-down sleuth and his small squad of misfits, dragged into a chain of events that are way over their head. Prepare for one of the most amazing stories ever told in computer RPGs!

Are you ready for a radical Sci-Fi adventure in the strangest corner of the universe? Get Anachronox for only $2.39 on GOG.com. The promo lasts until Tuesday, March 19, at 10:59AM GMT.
Oh go on. I'll bite. I love a good cRPG, and this better be good. OR ELSE!
Well, for those that can't be bothered to actually play the game; there is a movie.

tinyE: Wow. A promo and I actually have money for it, BUT, I keep hearing mixed reviews on this. Let me throw down a few peramiters and I'll leave it to the wonderfull forum members to give me a thumbs up or down.

First, I like RPGs but I like to keep character builds somewhat simple and limited in terms of party members. I don't want to spend 2 hours doing an entire character evaluation for 5 or 6 people everytime someone levels up. I'm sorry BG, while a great game, I got tired of monitoring the progression and inventory of THAT many people.
No such thing here.
Second, I DON'T like Jap anime. I find it annoying and trite.
The only japanese about this game is the horrible combat system, which is seemingly taken straight out of the worst of the worst jRPG.
Finally, I LOVE bizarre settings, strange people, and a sense of humor.
Plenty of that here.
Should I get this or hold out for something else?
If you can stand the combat (or ignore it for the sake of the rest of the game) then you'll find a brilliant experience here. If you get it and grow tired of the combat, do a Google search for Anachronox the Movie.

The main reason I don't have it and am not getting it on GOG is my hate of the combat system (and I also have a physical copy). I love the rest of the game.

I just noticed there is also a demo. Ooops. Could have saved myself a lot of typing and this poor forum a lot of reading. :(
Heh, I've just started playing this yesterday, and so far I'm really enjoying it. I'm not too keen on the semi-turnbased JRPG-style combat but since I've set the game to Easy they are only a minor distraction and over pretty quickly - in fact they're so ridiculously quick and easy now that I wonder if I made the right choice in difficulty (e.g. opponent hits me for 16hp, I kill him with one hit of 250hp :D ), but then again, I'm mostly in it for the story and setting.

The setting is pretty cool, because it's so alien and still quite fascinating and consistent, and I like the story-telling, too. It's also great for people who like exploring and collecting stuff, as it features a similar way of earning money as Beyond Good & Evil, just like reporter Jade is carrying around a camera and shooting photos for additional income, so does detective Boots. So while it's essentially a JRPG with linear storytelling, few choices and no active character customization (except for equipping items), it also has optional freeform questing to a certain degree. I probably spent at least half of the time playing not following the main story but roaming the city, exploring, talking to people, looking for collectibles and doing minor quests, just for the fun of it. Also, once your party has more than one member, you can switch the party leader and often people will have different things to say to different party leaders (nothing important most of the time, but it's fun seeing people react differently to different characters, treating your party not as one, but as a group of individuals). I think it's just as much a 3D adventure as it is a RPG. The character models are pretty blocky but the game world is very immersive nevertheless.

Anyway, I'd say if you're the least bit interested in trying the game, it's a steal at this price.

Anachronox. It starts with a U.

PMIK: There is still some hope in the world when you buy a classic game for less than a cup of coffee!
I don't know about that.

Sure, the game price is great! But the price for a good cup of coffee, now if that's not a sign of the downfall of our society, I don't know what is...
When they say jrpg, is it more in the vein of final fantasy games? I love rpg's but am over those FF games and haven't touched any like it in over 10 years. Thanks.
One of the best games I discovered in GOG, great plot.

The demo has an option to turn off the cursing. Does the full game have that? I hope so because I'm not going to tolerate a bunch of fucking cursing while I play my fucking compter game.

Depends on what you mean by that. What makes it JRPG-style is:

1. the combat system (turn-based, but with real time reaction windows; you have to wait until it's your turn but then react quickly; contrary to some other JRPG you also have the option to move and change your position though)

2. the character development (your character is predefined with his own personality, you level up automatically and don't distribute stat or skill points yourself; your inventory is displayed as a list and you can only equip 5 items at the same time, one weapon, one, shield, one amulet, two supporting items like bracelets or rings whatever)

3. the way the dialogues are displayed (you click on an NPC and you get that - often blue - window with some text in it; you close the window, you click on the NPC again and the NPC might still have something different to say, so you repeat until he keeps saying the same thing and then you move on; sometimes you get to choose an answer, but most of the time you just read what they have to say)

The style is not anime and the humor isn't necessarily close to JRPGs either, but it *does* have weird humor sometimes. Everything else doesn't feel like a JRPG to me, more like a 3D adventure.

Probably they refer to the turn-based combat and linear story-based narrative...

edit: or, all that Leroux said.. ;p

That said, I'll go with the others: Buy it, people, buy it now! ;p

Huh? That's weird. I don't remember any inappropriate cursing or an option to turn it off ... I think I'd remember if I had read something like "fuck" anywhere in the game. (I hope you're not trolling, this really sounds strange to me ... ;) )

yup, there's an option for that.. it's also in a separated setup, but I don't know how it works..
One FINAL question...I promise. The demo has a hi-res option that doesn't seem to work. I take it the game does look pretty good though, being 12 years old as it is.
