Arcanum. It still is relevant today. A must play title for RPG players.
I.M.H.O. Buy Serious sam hd and Arcanum leave zork the hell alone it's way too confusing and trippy and drives you up the wall.

Alright who's downrepping me not funny guys.

If you use any other DD sites, get Arcanum and Zork then get Serious Sam when it's on sale(of which you could get the HD remakes and originals bundled for around the same price). If you don't want any DRM in your Serious Sam, then well it's hard to say they're all completely different games..

Zork is confusing! That's all I needed to know!

Licurg: I'll repeat myself: Sacrifice

It's the best game you've never heard of.

DrOblivious: Sorry, but I'm not big into stratagy. And so people stop recomending it, I am going to get arcanum, I just need to know how obtuse zork's puzzles are to make a desicion.
Sacrifice is not like other RTS games. It's 3rd person, you control your wizard as you'd control a character in an action game, and the control on your units is only as in-depth as you want it to be. It also has almost 0 resource gathering, if that helps.

Never played Arcanum, but heard it's good from many people, so I don't think you'll be disappointed. But I doubt it's as good as Sacrifice. Take a leap of faith my friend, trust me, buy Sacrifice and you won't regret it.

alright, now I'm interested. This sounds sort of like battalion wars for the gamecube, is it anything like that, because I LOVE batalion wars.

Never owned a gamecube, so can't help you with that. But I can tell you this:

Sacrifice is perfect in almost every aspect:

-The best voice-acting of any game outside the Legacy of Kain series
-Best music in any game ever.
-Unique and perfectly balanced gameplay that doesn't exist in any other PC game I ever played(and I played quite a lot)
-High re-playability, with 5 different campaigns, each with it's own ending.
-Beautiful artistic design
-Touching storyline

And I'm gonna stop there and let you discover the rest for yourself :D
Zork is from a time when you had a paper and pen beside your computer, it's expected that you (and not the game) will remember and take care of important things - making maps, keeping notes, etc. As another way of copy-protection all the extras (manuals and other documents) are kind of needed to play the game. To play these old games from infocom is an experience you should be prepared, they are not like todays adventures where everything is explained and you can't do anything wrong.

It also has it's share of issues and Licurg IS the local fanboy. Here, metacritic page, read a few reviews, user reviews, see if the concept actually seems interesting to you personally.
I'll probably look into zork and sacrifice some other time, but for now, I'm getting arcanum and serious sam.

Sacrifice is also in my GOG top 10 and one of the greatest games of all time, I can't recommend it above Arcanum, but only just. IMO, it is as good as Licurg is saying, though there's definitely GOGers who disagree (every time this comes up;) ).

Go play Sacrifice, cast Bore on the enemy, then come back and tell me if you still feel the same;)

I remember the first time I tried Bore... Used it too close, killed my wizard and almost all my units :))

I'm pretty sure we all did that:)

Only game that I can easily recall that's really gotten the scale of epic/high end/top level spells right.

It has no issues, only people who don't know how to play it...
