We're giving away 100 games a day to our users to celebrate our 5th birthday!

For the last 5 years we've been doing our best to bring the best games in history to your home computers. Now, we're celebrating our birthday, and we want you--our users--to have a blast! That's why for the next five days we'll be giving away 100 games a day via our different channels (the forums, social media, YouTube). The details of each giveaway will be revealed on day to day basis, so make sure to drop by daily and see what are we up to.

So, we heard you like puzzles and trivia? Let's have some more of that, shall we? Today, our giveaway is once again forum-based, but requires some gaming knowledge and puzzle-solving skill. We present, the GOG.com B-Day crossword puzzle!

GOG.com 5th B-Day Crossword Puzzle

As you may have noticed, this isn't your regular crossword puzzle. You'll need not only guess what the correct words are, but also where do they go in the diagram. If you manage to get enough of them right, you'll be able to figure out the secret password. Send an email with the said password with the subject line CROSSWORD to contest@gog.com. Out of all the people who do this, we'll pick 100 users who will be sent a $9.99 gift-code.You have time until tomorrow, that's Friday, October 4, at 2:59PM GMT to send us your answer and enter the giveaway, as at that time we'll be moving to another communications channel with a new set of rules.

EDIT:
Have you participated in one of our 5th birthday contests, but are still waiting for its conclusion? We're a bit overwhelmed by the number of entries, as this is the ongoing biggest series of giveaways in the whole of GOG.com history. Please be patient, well sort it all out, eventually, and everyone who was lucky enough to win something will be notified. Sorry for the delay!

Well done crossword thing. I enjoyed that. Some clues were very interesting to say the least.

Buenro-games: All I did was use the Snipping Tool to cut it out.
avatar
JMich: Why snipping tool? Grab the image, then crop it in paint (since you will be editting it in paint after all).
I am addicted to the sniping tool since it takes only the portions of what I want. I didn't care for the top portion of the picture so I just used the snipping tool to simply grab the image without it. But seriously, yeah, I am addicted to the snipping tool. : D

Extra Win7 tip. Pin it to the taskbar in the Nth position, then WinKey+#N starts it, so you don't have to go looking for it. So if it's in the 1st position, WinKey+1 starts it. Obviously works for any of the 9 (or 10, not sure) programs pinned in the taskbar.

DarkoD13: I have to say though, it would be nice if you (GOG staff) guys had a better format for this kind of puzzles next year. Perhaps something where we could type in the missing letters? I don't know if I did it wrong, but since I have no printer, I solved the crossword in ms paint and the result is a horrific mess. I'll upload the pic tomorrow for a laugh.
Paint.NET is a nice graphics program for Windows and it's free to download. It's not quite as beefy as photoshop though can be used to do some nice stuff too if you're patient. It also has plugins. I use it. Otherwise you could get the GIMP but that is a larger application more like photoshop.

Think of Paint.NET as sort of a notepad++ but for images. It made working with the crossword a bit easier.

Thanks for that, I didn't know the Winkey+# activated my taskbar icons. Have a +1 on your post. ; )
I give up!

I don't think I would get the clues even if someone told me the password!

Useless! I hate this puzzle and myself!

TheJadedOne: For the rest I made a small Java program to search this page for words and sequences of words that matched the puzzle constraints as they played out (e.g., N letters, Xth letter = ..., Yth letter = this or that)

DProject: That was easier for you, than legitimately solving the crossword? It wasn't that difficult, you know.
What do you mean by "than legitimately solving the crossword"? I did "legitimately" solve it. I suppose if someone pounds a nail into a board with a hammer you'd say they didn't "legitimately" pound the nail in, I mean, they should have used their forehead or something.

And yes, writing a little program (about one screen of code, not including the web page which I copy/pasted into the program as one big string) was easier, faster and less frustrating than going through that entire list of games and manually trying to find words and word sequences of certain lengths with certain letters in certain spots. Plus, programming is fun and manually scanning long lists of words is most definitely NOT.

Calm down friend, all I'm saying is that programming a small piece of software to help with the puzzle seemed to me like an overstretch. It was probably a very simple thing for you to do, but from a layman's point of view the whole idea seemed funny. Spending an hour or more to figure out and create a program rather than solving the puzzle the way GOG intended, by using your brain. I hadn't played half of the titles in the crossword, but still found the puzzle relatively easy.
Loved this one! Not only because it's a good puzzle in itself, but also because while solving it I discovered quite a few great games I've never paid attention to or didn't even heard of up until now. Thank you GOG for giving me a lot of ideas of what games to play in the nearest several months, instead of playing my favorite PS: T for 20-th time or so. Happy birthday!

Easy now... How many do you have?

And re: comments about playing the games, I actually played just two (or one, depending how specific you want to be), and then a demo of a third.

Heh, that was a case of "wait, I remember hearing something about this, now what game was it about?" for me, and then search through catalog. Then there's at least one other that should be obvious the moment you see the title in the catalog. Google is your friend for some of the others, leaving likely just "the cat was horny" (you'll say "well played" after you figure it out though, and you can after a look through the catalog if you have the rest filled in) and "selected!" (only saw how that's connected to the game after a search through that game's forum today, but filled in the name quickly while doing the puzzle, was obvious what fit there).

(Hope that's not considered spoiling here.)
Took me way longer than expected but I got the password finally. Still not sure what "summer camp for specially gifted" is...
