EdwardB: Recently I purchased several games from GOG. Somewhere around four or five. When I received my bank statement, I noticed each of these GOG charges were accompanied by a $1 charge listed as "ATM fee."

Does anyone know what this is?
We always charge for the exact amount shown on the checkout screen. This amount also includes the applicable VAT tax.

It is possible that a bank may charge a few extra cents for some services they consider to be "additional", like currency changes or performing international transactions, but that depends on the bank. Some don't charge extra for pretty much anything.

An "ATM" charge doesn't fit an online purchase, so it may have been a coincidence. It could, however, be a badly named "generic extra charge". You would have to contact your bank to make sure.

As a ground rule, GOG never charges more than is shown on the checkout screen. Ever.

EdwardB: I contacted my bank and they tried telling me at first that this was likely a scam organization. I explained that I have been a customer of this website for more than a year and that I never had these problems with my previous bank.

I was then told that the fee was likely because GOG was likely running my payment through as a debit/ATM transaction (thus, incurring and ATM fee and some foreign fees (and I did have some additional small charges).

So, the bank said that it is not their fault.

I don't suppose GOG has someone who could send my bank manager an email?
Hrm... I'll consult the "as a debit/ATM transaction" part with our payment service provider, but I've never heard of such a thing.

I also wonder about the "scam organization" bit. It may just be a script template that your bank's support folk recite for all but the biggest players in the online transaction business... We may be a relative newcomer, but our payment history has been nothing but stellar, so we should be in good standing with all but the most distrustful banks.

If you could PM me your bank manager's e-mail, I could contact him - if there's any person at GOG whose position is suited for such a task, it's me. I doubt your bank would change their policies regarding GOG just because I'm a nice guy via e-mail, though. No harm in trying, anyway! :)

Navagon: I'm not exactly recommending Paypal, but you don't get this crap with them. Just remember to set it up with direct debit and not leave any money in your Paypal account.
PayPal can be tricky here. Basically, if you use funds that are already on your PayPal account, you won't experience any problems. If you use a credit card through PayPal, you _may_ suffer from the same limitations as when you would use the card directly on the site.

SimonG: Well, you are selling abandonware ... ;-P
Since the software on our site is legally sold by us and we offer support for the software in question, it cannot be in any shape or form considered abandonware.

Rights holders have been found, negotiated and consulted with, so, again, there goes the question of who owns the rights to any particular piece of software on our site.

I do realize you were joking but I wanted to make sure no one got the wrong idea :D and I never got the chance to counterlawyer you, SimonG, back when I was a member of the community :D

Is that even possible? :P

It's possible if one trains for a very long time, grinds some trash mobs while earning tons of XP and gold, and visits the right trainers. Also, research into a particular issue helps. :D

EdwardB: In any case, she spoke to her supervisor and said that the bank would refund me all ATM charges and that they would put a waiver on all purchases from GOG so that I do not get charged this fee again.
Makes you wonder if there's actually a legitimate reason for this kind of weird extra charge, or if some banks charge unjustified fees until someone makes a fuss about it... I hope not, but anything is possible.

Glad to see everything worked out for you, but still I will discuss it with our provider, in case it can be avoided somehow. We don't want you guys and gals charged extra any more than you do.
