Firek: PayPal can be tricky here. Basically, if you use funds that are already on your PayPal account, you won't experience any problems. If you use a credit card through PayPal, you _may_ suffer from the same limitations as when you would use the card directly on the site.
Might be worth a try though. Loads of banks pull crap like this with international transactions (like it's still the 80s or something) but, personally, I've not heard of anyone having those kinds of problems with Paypal.

Firek: I also wonder about the "scam organization" bit...
Not the first time this has happened. It might just be them reading from their patented list of excuses, true. But it could also be due to GOG's finances being handled in another country.

SimonG: Well, you are selling abandonware ... ;-P
Since the software on our site is legally sold by us and we offer support for the software in question, it cannot be in any shape or form considered abandonware.

Rights holders have been found, negotiated and consulted with, so, again, there goes the question of who owns the rights to any particular piece of software on our site.

I do realize you were joking but I wanted to make sure no one got the wrong idea :D and I never got the chance to counterlawyer you, SimonG, back when I was a member of the community :D

It's possible if one trains for a very long time, grinds some trash mobs while earning tons of XP and gold, and visits the right trainers. Also, research into a particular issue helps. :D

Firek: If you could PM me your bank manager's e-mail, I could contact him - if there's any person at GOG whose position is suited for such a task, it's me. I doubt your bank would change their policies regarding GOG just because I'm a nice guy via e-mail, though. No harm in trying, anyway! :)
It may not do any good, but I greatly appreciate your offer and will forward you my bank manager's email account along with the information I have.

I believe I will change banks if this doesn't solve the problem, as the person I spoke with at the bank was kind of rude and gave me their email address with great reluctance.

I never had any additional charges from last bank - all I ever had was the total showed on the screen.

My current bank keeps trying to tell me that GOG is running my card through as an ATM/Debit card and that it is their fault I am being charged this extra money. Based on past experiences, I do not believe this is the case.

I must say, that is astonishingly correct. I literally couldn't have worded it any better.

Damn, now I must resort to the old "You had to remove mod support". And even that is only fresh for another two weeks at most....

You actually never said if I successfully pulled your leg with the "anonymous gifting wishlist entry" thread. Come on, did I at least worry you a little bit? You seemed a little bit uneasy...

The Beetlejews.
I was preparing to send an email to Firek when my bank called.

It was the manager. She is actually a cashier supervisor or something like that, I forget her exact title.

In any case, she spoke to her supervisor and said that the bank would refund me all ATM charges and that they would put a waiver on all purchases from GOG so that I do not get charged this fee again.

I still don't really understand why I was charged this fee in the first place, and I didn't get a very clear answer. The woman I spoke to seemed to stick by her guns saying that it was a result of the way GOG charged my card, but I never had this problem with my other bank.

I still have some kind of international fee charge tacked onto my purchases. It is something like 1%. I know I had a charge of 6 cents for one game.

I asked the bank manager what this charge was for and she said she didn't know but that she was sure someone was getting it as a "kickback." Which I can only assume means that my bank is not charging me this fee, but, honestly, she didn't seem to know a whole lot about why these fees were on my statement.

I don't know which bank you use, but dig around on their website for foreign transaction fees and you'll probably find your answer.

I get the same thing; it's not really anything to be worried about. GOG is a European company (incorporated in Cyprus, business in Poland) so many US banks charge minor international fees, though they vary in amount. My bank charges around 2% I think but there isn't really any way around that other than getting a different credit card from another bank. A lot of prepaid cards also won't function for international purchases, either. You usually need to buy a special international/premium/gold/whatever prepaid card for purchases from GOG to work. Until GOG opens a US office, it's just a price of doing business.

Makes you wonder if there's actually a legitimate reason for this kind of weird extra charge, or if some banks charge unjustified fees until someone makes a fuss about it... I hope not, but anything is possible.

Glad to see everything worked out for you, but still I will discuss it with our provider, in case it can be avoided somehow. We don't want you guys and gals charged extra any more than you do.
