I like shoot 'em ups. I'm not very good at them, but I feel there's a certain purity and immediacy to their gameplay, which makes them quite a lot of fun.

On PC, my favourites are probably Tyrian 2000 and Highway Hunter.

I also really like Axelay and Parodius on the SNES.

Recently, I found Beat Hazard Ultra to be very interesting and enjoyable, as well.
Don't remember playing any besides the ones from Commodore 64 but that is way way back.

Though recently I got really interested in Arcen games new shmup named <span class="bold">Starward Rogue: Life at the End</span>.

Its being released on 22.01.2016.

bushidoukitsune: I've been a long-time fan of the genre since my days as a wee lad playing Gradius III on my SNES a couple of decades ago, and even earlier when I've played my grandmother's copy of 1943 - The Battle For Midway on her NES. Nothing's more thrilling than dodging bullets and shooting things down, I tell ya what! Just this morning, a friend of mine gifted me a copy of eXceed 3rd on Steam and needless to say, it's been VERY hard putting this one down!

But enough about me, what about you guys? Do you like shmups? What are your favorites and recommendations? Let's go, and be attitude for gains!
Yes, shootemups are ok. I am more interested though in your statement:
"grandmother's copy of 1943 - The Battle For Midway on her NES"
Just trying to work out the numbers here, but wouldn't that make your gran about 40? I mean my mum is over 60, and she has only had a laptop for a while!
No.
Oddly enough I've never been a fan despite the fact that I love chocolate and marshmallows. Somehow the combination just ruins it for me.

Oh wait, that's 'smores'.
Tyrian (free on GOG)
Jets'n'Guns - inspired by Tyrian, packed with humour and equipment, has a really good sense of progression.
*thinks about mentioning Touhou but decides not to*
Also,Cho Aniki.

I spend 99% of my time on them. Take a look at this old thread too, I and some other folks mentioned a few good free & quality titles there.

I don't know what my fav is (these days I am seriously practising Darius Gaiden and Ibara Kuro), but I truly hate Tyrian. Yay, spaceships on ice skates!

EDIT:

Well, here are my links for the lazy.

MECHA Ritz (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdY-zdM34IA) [amazing soundtrack, and overall style]
Aero Chimera (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wW0uhJcxEhA) [tough as fck]

Leiria Stargazer (https://n-linear.org/stargazer/download.html)
Has ESPGaluda mechanics and an awesome original sound track. Of course, excellent gameplay.

Zen-ichi (http://mna.net/equinox/Zen-Ichi/10th/)
Ignore the aged graphics for a moment and play a stage or two, and see for yourself how well this one is made. Download link at the very bottom. To fix the Win7+ display color problem, either set the compatibility options like in the screenshot, or do the usual kill explorer.exe trick.
I recently wrote a small hack to set and lock the rank in MECHA Ritz, if anybody is interested just ask.

As long it is not bullet hell and is something like Galak-Z
Okay, one more for those who like the older Gradius style:

REVOLGEAR II Ver.D REVISION+EX
http://necobikkuri.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-195.html

You want this specific version of the game and not earlier editions. Really modern take on the Gradius formula with adrenaline inducing moments and best of all no checkpoints! The music is awesome too, but it is not an original soundtrack.

Fairfox: Sounds like a hiccup combined with a burp.
It stands for shoot-'em-up.
"R:Type", "SWIV" and "Battle Squadron One"..................had probably spent quite some time of my life diverting my "Amiga" power to play those.
Yeah, I like shmups.

As far as recommendations go (at least ones that are on GOG), Crimzon Clover and REVOLVER360 RE:ACTOR are good. Haven't tried Astebreed yet.
