Seriously that spaces forum bug gets to me. If it's something I can't stand it's stuff that breaks the flow when I read.

We want more SHMUPs on GOG.
I've been addicted to Namco's "Metal Hawk" lately, it's a great old-school shmup from the '80s, but with scaling and rotation effects! Good music, too! Highly recommended!

bushidoukitsune: I've been a long-time fan of the genre since my days as a wee lad playing Gradius III on my SNES a couple of decades ago, and even earlier when I've played my grandmother's copy of 1943 - The Battle For Midway on her NES. Nothing's more thrilling than dodging bullets and shooting things down, I tell ya what! Just this morning, a friend of mine gifted me a copy of eXceed 3rd on Steam and needless to say, it's been VERY hard putting this one down!

But enough about me, what about you guys? Do you like shmups? What are your favorites and recommendations? Let's go, and be attitude for gains!
I love shmups. It is, in a lot of ways, the most satisfying genre to get good at, and I like that there's basically no downtime -- you start the game, and it's pure tension from start to finish.

My top 5, in no order, are:

Mushihimesama Futari
Ketsui
Battle Garegga
Soukyugurentai
Under Defeat
Since this topic is here, I have a couple criticisms that apply to certain subsets of shmups:

1. Zero Wing (also an issue in games like Gradius): In this game, it takes a while to become fully powered up, and when you die, you lose all your power ups. This means that, if you die even just once, the difficulty becomes unmanageable. This makes the game very unfriendly to beginner players, and makes multiple lives seem rather pointless. Touhou handles this better by taking away only some power when you die; Recca solves this by giving you a super weapon that you can use without any power ups; some games have a shallow power up system (I'm thinking something like Mario (which isn't a shmup) or Star Prince (sub-game of Retro Game Challenge)); some games (Jamestown and Crimzon Clover) don't have power up systems in the usual sense.

2. Crimzon Clover: There is two much noise on the screen. With the busy background, as well as the stars that enemies drop (especially if you are in Break mode), it becomes hard to tell what is actually going on at times, and can give one a headache if playing (or even just watching) the game for too long. (I consider enemies and the bullets you have to dodge to be signal, not noise, as you actually have to pay attention to them.)

For that matter, I don't remember seeing *any* shmup which benefits from handicapping the player in that way. Downgrades to firing power, fixed checkpoints instead of instant respawn after death, and no rapidfire button are nothing but significant design flaws and a big killjoy; it baffles my mind how these things remained the norm until late 90s. Thankfully most modern games have recognized this and gotten rid of these annoyances, but there are still a few examples that could've been made much much better games with some common sense. (I'm looking at you Hydorah [granted, that guy doesn't know jack about shmups yet made a pretty good one by just studying older hits, so that's already impressive])
I got Ikaruga on Steam this morning. It's pure shmupping bliss, with a twist! You absorb bullets of the same color of your aircraft while dodging those of the opposite color. Additionally, doing damage against opposite-colored enemies is more effective and scoring seems to be dependent on keeping chains by killing enemies based on color.

I'm really enjoying it, it's already one of my favorite games of this genre!
Is shmups when a priest holds two dwarves upside down while three girls... oh...
oh. Oh no, shmups is disgusting, you should all be ashamed of yourselves!
Not a huge fan of shmups myself, but I'll play 'em here and there.

mikopotato: i would suggest Crimzon Clover : World Ignition
Personally, I think that's a terrible idea. I would suggest Crimzon Clover : World Ignition

Maxvorstadt: Well, the time for Shmups is gone since the early 90s. I played games like Uridium, Silkworm and Xenon Megablast back then and had great fun, but these times are gone!
Oooh, Uridium. I had forgotten all about that blast from the Amiga`s days :D
Rare I like schmups, but that one I did.

Also, T-Zero.

I missed out there.
On my CBM64, I used to program games or do images, rather than play games like all normal folks hehe
