It’s been over two decades since the release of the first space trading and combat simulator from Egosoft. Since then, the X series has expanded rapidly with three sequels and three standalone expansions. The release of X4: Split Vendetta in 2020 shows that the studio is still on the road to create the perfect space simulator. That’s why we’ve decided to ask one of its founders a bunch of questions concerning games… and space, of course.

GOG.COM: Why do you think people keep staring at the stars, wishing to explore space?

Bernd Lehahn: I like to believe that it is human nature to be curious and to explore. Space is of course one of, if not THE ultimate frontier. Whenever I get a chance to look up to the stars, I cannot help but wonder about the vastness of it all. These unbelievable distances, the ability to look so far back into our past, and even today, with our very limited knowledge, we are only just beginning to grasp so many incredible things about this universe.

So yeah, the real question should be why we are not staring upwards a lot more every night…

When you started to develop the game, did you ever think about how big the universe created by gamers would become?

Not really. When we started with the first version of what would eventually later turn into X: Beyond the Frontier, we had no idea it would gain so much traction. We were an extremely tiny developer and used to developing titles for our local market only. We had made adventure games out of a love for it, more than for the money, and X: Beyond the Frontier was really the first time, after almost 10 years of work in this industry, that a game actually made us money. That it would kick off an online community and still be a growing universe with mods and all this online madness 20 years later never crossed my mind at the time.

Which one of the game’s many cool features made you most proud?

I am personally coming from the graphics engine programming side, so I tend to be overly interested in technical features like the volumetric fog of our latest engine incarnation or the shadows we already had in X2: The Threat back in 2003 when I was still coding myself. But looking at the big picture, the single biggest achievement of the entire series is always the bottom-up simulated universe and especially the living economy. We are always simulating thousands of ships and agents acting in this whole complex universe and the result is a game that behaves differently and sometimes unpredictably, every time you start it new. So yeah, that’s probably number one.

If you could choose - travel to space tomorrow or have a fantastic holiday in warm weather for two weeks - which one would you pick?

Just asking this question seems like an insult! I would probably give my left arm for a chance to travel into space.

When, in your opinion, do you think people will start to colonize space?

Thanks to the new efforts driven by private corporations (hello, SpaceX), I am optimistic that the first steps in this direction may happen sooner rather than later.

It is all driven by economics this time around and I am quite sure there is a lot of potential money in this business. Not so much colonizing Mars or the Moon I’m afraid, but definitely mining asteroids for example. I am not sure if the completely profit-driven approach is necessarily the best for this field, as it comes with some high risks too (think Kessler syndrome), but it is undeniably bringing much faster progress than the last 50 years since the moon landing… So count me in! :-)

If you love to travel through space, stay tuned for the X4: Cradle of Humanity DLC, a next great expansion to the X universe that is coming soon on GOG.COM
To space!

By the way, is this a new record for GOG? The oldest news posts dropping off the carousel in a mere four hours.
Good read, thanks!
I'm going to be very honest here because I believe my feedback will be useful, and might result in me buying something I previously wouldn't have purchased. I mean this politely and in a kind way.

The only way I will ever buy anything X4 related is if I can buy a pack that includes the main game and all past, present, and future DLC content, and if I have a solid 100% guarantee that there is nothing inside like easy anti cheat EAC (if I got that correct) or denuovo or any other form of hidden features and DRM.

The biggest issues I have with the X series are the cost. It's really expensive and If I want it all, I'm probably gonna be eating only beans for a little while, and of course the DRM.

The current most helpful review on the page currently reads: By "Mordhar":
"Egosoft account, registration of game’s key (as an equivalent for linking of Steam account) and internet connection are REQUIRED for access to several core-features. Since patch 1.5 “ventures” are added. While they presented as completely optional “pseudo-multiplayer” activities, they are the only way to get certain in-game items/gameplay options without the use of cheats and/or exploits. They are also the only reliable way for crew leveling, which is extremely slow without this “optional content” (more than week of non-stop gameplay is not enough to level-up NPC to “5-stars”, and there are dozens or even hundreds of NPCs in player’s fleet). Combined with introduction of “EgoCredits” it leads to concerns about microtransactions for “time savers”. Those activities were coded in game before (they were discovered in game files at the first day and achievement for them was on steam from the beginning), but were added only 3 weeks later. Presumably to circumvent “no DRM, single-player game” limitations."

IF this is true, It makes me very uncomfortable about buying anything from egosoft.

I wish these things just weren't problems, but they are the biggest things stopping me from buying anything X4 related, even though I honestly would LOVE to buy this. These issues are a huge repellent to me.

Thank you and have a nice day.

edit:
I read a bunch more reviews and there are significant amounts of people complaining about lack of features or other bugs and issues. This is also a game-stopper for me.

I will politely steer clear of this entirely, maybe forever.

Those ventures were a mistake in my opinion but they are not needed in order to play.

For less bugs, improved usability and a complete version including all DLCs you will have to wait. Maybe a couple of years. As an added bonus, your pc just might be capable of running it well (keep the game above 60 f/s) when that time comes. The problem is that as the game world grows, so does the demands on CPU and RAM.

Egosoft does not use any copy protection with their games ever since they took over publishing their own games.

Is it playable? I would like to try it out ,but last games were buggy and I hate that.

Hmm, what to say. The user interface is horribly complicated and confusing and the auto-pilot is awful, why they have turned off collision detection as default :-( Otherwise the game is an alright-ish economy simulation. Certainly not bug free but I feel they are mostly at a managable level. Please make sure your computer meets the hardware requirements. I doubt 8GB of RAM will last you through a game with two DLCs installed.

There also seems to be a newletter discount for the X:Rebirth and X4:Foundations.

EDIT: Egosoft says they plan on growing the game a lot more. Look forward to upgrading your pc in order to (keep) play(ing) this.
