Why do supermarkets trash the expired food stock, instead of gifting it to the poor, hungry and needy?

Exactly. Like the real life stores, you have to wait for discounts, special offers and try to keep your purchases to the absolutely needed minimum... Or participate to the "charity events", called "giveaways" here!

RWarehall: The game pages have a "Bestselling" sort, that is one way to tell. It's shows ranked sales back to 2013 or so when the site was revamped as opposed to the front page which seems to cover a few days sales.
Thanks for the information. I have always been leery of such "Bestselling" filters and have chosen to just use them as another filter as to possibly find items I might be interested in.

That is not to say Gog's "Bestselling" filter is not legit, just my personal opinion based on past experiences with other site's manipulating such filters.

Thanks again

Because its poisonous!

You don't agree? Drink a bottle of milk 3 weeks past its expiration and see how you feel. ;P

smrtgi19: I know Master of Orion 3 is crap, you know it's crap and yet its sold here for 10 bucks, I mean do they have to sell the horrible games along with the best games the good games
Subjective. You may find it crap, while others may not. And selling the 'horrible' games may have been part of the agreement in getting the other games here.

Liability. If they give food away and it happens to make people ill or worse because it's expired, they're liable.

I do that all the time. Milk and cream can go many weeks past their best-until date (it's not an expiration date), without any negative effects if they're properly refrigerated. And before you ask, I haven't been ill in almost a decade and I've never had food poisoning.

Excluding fish and meat for example, which have an actual expiration date, most food that is thrown away because it's past the date on the packaging is actually still perfectly fine in every way, shape or form (or taste, or smell). But people can't get their heads around the fact that in most cases it just a date until which the manufacturer will guarantee you that the product will have the intended taste, consistency, etc.. It usually stays like this for many more weeks, it's just that the manufacturer will not compensate you if for some reason it doesn't.

So, what almost all people do nowadays is the equivalent of scrapping a perfectly functioning car just because its 2 year comprehensive warranty has expired.

That could be gotten around with a waiver. In Germany there is a charity that operates with donations from supermarkets, restauraunts, bakers, etc. who will give products close to or in some cases slightly past the best-until date to be distributed to those in need. There has never been a lawsuit against the charity because of it.

In actual fact most supermarkets don't donate because they are much more afraid of losing sales due to the enormous amount of stuff they would usually throw away being given away for free.
