Potzato: Mario 64 is one of the mario I have very fond memories of, but for that same reason I wouldn't dare power it up again. The thought of it is making me anxious. I am glad I fully completed it years ago.

The thing with the marios, is that the musical score is getting more impressive with each new game. I loved Galaxy for that more than the gameplay (but I really enjoyed the gameplay nonetheless : one of the richest among every game ever made)

Impressive. Most Impressive.

Potzato: Yes that.
I was also thinking of that level where you ride a ball and the music plays according to your speed. That's the pinacle of my gaming experience. Because you can beat the level, or you can beat it with fashion and bling. Extremely rewarding.
All the more reason Nintendo should make a new Super Mario Galaxy for WiiU. Wii-U is capable of making fantastic visuals like Mario Kart 8. Oh imagine the splendorous visuals a Super Mario Galaxy 3 for Wii-U would look like :)
I´m torn between "Super Mario Bros. 3" and "Super Mario World" because I spent immensely fun times with both playing along with family. Good thing cartridges don´t *wear out.

*(in a practical sense not technical before anyone comes explaining how the oxygen compounds affect the silicon embedded circuits ;P).
I'm not a big on platformers, but I really did enjoy super paper mario.
Super Mario Bros 3. I remember going to a Nintendo championship that coincided with the release of The Wizard and Mario 3. Was like the most hyped thing since sliced bread. Mario 3 was one of the few games in the history of marketing to actually live up to its name.

The first one was amazing too, but 3 took the whole platformer thing to a whole new level.
I consider Super Mario World to be one of the best platformers ever made and, as a Sega kid growing up, maybe it's not just nostalgia speaking for me.
I cannot decide... I am among these...

1) Super Mario ALL STARS
2) Yoshi's Island/ Super Mario World 2
3) Super Mario Land 2
4) Super Mario 64
5) Super Mario RPG

This is a very tough call. I love all these games equally, and they are easily the best Nintendo games i have ever played. I honestly cannot choose one out of them. They are all classics.

Austrobogulator: Also, I'd like to know from the people that love Super Mario 64, have you played it recently?
Yeah, just the other day. Admittedly, it was the DS version, which lacks some of the finest polish and should never, ever be played without a 3DS thumbstick, but my N64's out of the question and many of the new stars are nice, so it evens out.
Yeah... N 64 version is better. Better controls. Sound. Graphics. etc. Get Project64, download the rom and enjoy.
Seeing how I only played Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario 64 enough to make a judgement on them (although I did play a little bit of Super Mario Bros. 2 at a friend's place, and liked it, I can't really say much about it as I only ever saw the first level or so), and of those I'd probably say Super Mario Bros. 3 is my favourite (I have to acquire that one again, it was probably sold together with my NES some 20 years ago or so, I have a NES again, abut not the games that matter most to me), but that's probably because I remember that one the best.

I barely remember the first game at all though, all the memory images I can identify are of 3, 2, and 64.
Here is my personal top 5, though I think Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 64 are the most important in the series.

1. Super Mario World
2. Super Mario Bros. 3
3. Super Mario Sunshine
4. Super Mario 3D World
5. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

(If Yoshi's Island counts I'd put that at #3 and bump out SML2)
As is classically understood compilation carts/disks are exempted otherwise allstars and megaman collection would dominate the top spots of all lists for all time.

Three then world. I do need to play galexy 2 and all the 3ds wiiu games yet.

I love all the Mario games, but its easy for me to pick my top three:

1. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Super Mario World
3. Super Mario 64

Where it gets tricky is when you add in all the other games...your RPGs, your Yoshis, what-have-you. My all-time favorite Mario game of any kind is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Absolutely fantastic game.
Yeah mario rpg is an amazing game, genuinely greater than the sum of its parts.

And so is Bowser's Inside Story, but OP was talking about the main Mario series.
