Just had a discussion on this. Just wondering what people on GOG thought? (We were limiting the discussion to the standard series, so not Mario Kart, RPG, Party, Paint, etc.)

For me it is Super Mario Brothers 3 with Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 as runners up.
Keep it classic.

and evidently out of focus. :P Sorry about that.

mario 64

i dont really like platformers but that one did everything right
including the camera
even now sega still has problems wtih the camera in a 3D sonic title
mario 64 is 19 years old and its camera is still better

it also showed how 3D could be done and how it could be done well

Hmmm i'll have to agree with you 100%

I've only beaten the first and third mario games... Maybe 64 on my computer in an emulator back in 2000, but that was ages ago...

However i'm going to say most of mario brothers games are sorta disappointments... Same formula, same mechanics, same story, same everything. Yes the first game brought about huge advancements in scrolling gameplay, but beyond that i've never really liked the games that much.
Let's see. Super Mario Galaxy, 3, and 64. In no particular order.

Runners down: Yoshi's New Island, as it takes the beautiful ending of Yoshi's Island and slaps you across the face for having made the trek across six dangerous world and rescuing them in the first place.

Super Mario Sunshine for making Peach so idiotic that she has to pause for thought when Twat Koopa makes the suggestion that he is her offspring. Also Kangaroo court, the Pintas being unhelpful at best, and the overall comedic structure of a bad SATAM cartoon doesn't help either. Nor does Mario's greatly reduced moveset.

I don't really like any of them, shocking I know.

Can I pick something else instead?
Super Mario Bros. 3 hits the sweet spot for me. But I haven't actually played a Mario game to completion past Super Mario World.

Yep, okay. I'll pick Spyro the Dragon instead.
Super Mario Bros. 3 then Super Mario Bros. 2 (Western version).

Also, I'd like to know from the people that love Super Mario 64, have you played it recently?
A tie between 3 and World.

same
I've actually gotta say Super Mario Brothers (the first one). The gameplay and music are just right. Graphics were far better in 3 and later snes games though.
Being a cheater, I will pull out my favorite cartridge: Super Mario All-Stars + World.
Super Paper Mario.

A fun game with a great sense of humour but with a tragic undertone as the game progresses that is quite surprising for a Mario game.
