morolf: Oh, I have a strong opinion about that...I'd say Command and Conquer 2: Tiberian sun. That was massively hyped back in 1999, and I, a gullible teenager, was so looking forward to it, waiting excitedly for the release. And then it was a total disappointment, mediocre, unbalanced gameplay and a lame story that didn't answer anything. That pretty much killed my interest in the C&C franchise so I can't tell you about later games.
I somewhat agree. It was Tiberian Sun development when EA kicked in. They made Westwood to wrap up the game, cut most of the promised features, mess with the story (it was not ready at the time) and of cause there was no time to polish the balance and the game itself.
Still TS wasn't a bad game, it had some cool moments (like ability to crush bridges with units on them), but it was not a great game like StarCraft either. And it definitely was not up to fans expectations.
