It's fatigue, man. I usually binge on older games a lot, then never touch them again until months later, when I have another urge to boot 'em up. That said, I usually heavily mod them, especially KOTOR 2, to at least give them a little bit of a facelift.
I also think that those games from the KOTOR/Neverwinter Nights era of early polygonal 3D - mid don't always tend to hold up very well, if you're not already into the story aspect, writing, combat, etc.

Happened to me about a year ago with Heroes of Might & Magic 3. I was replaying the whole series, I had a whale of a time with HoMM 1 and 2 and when I got 3 I expected it to be even better, like everyone remembers it as the pinnacle of the series, but instead I discovered I liked the older games better this time around.
Part of it was the graphics, somehow the more colorful, fable-like visuals of the first two games aged better in my eyes and keep things more charming. Part of it is probably that I played so much of the first two games in quick susccession I burnt out on the formula. Finally, I feel like 3 perhaps added too much in terms of spells, skills and buildings, and while i's very easy to jump right back into HoMM 1 & 2, 3 takes more time and patience to re-learn.

yep, i loved homm3 back when i was a teenager. as a mid-30s adult i prefer the simplicity and the look of the first two as well.Part of it was the graphics, somehow the more colorful, fable-like visuals of the first two games aged better in my eyes and keep things more charming. I would say it is a matter of getting into the game. I have something similar with Baldur's Gate. I wanted to get knowing the classic game and I also like RPG, fantasy and tactical elements, but when I play it, I cannot get into the game.

The magic of discovery not there. When I play it for the first time theres the storyline I want to discover. Would be fun to replay them but I basically know whats happening next.
Wish I had the luxury of replaying colonization 94', but I can't even find time to play the civ 4 version or the ... alpha centauri remake.
