It's fatigue, man. I usually binge on older games a lot, then never touch them again until months later, when I have another urge to boot 'em up. That said, I usually heavily mod them, especially KOTOR 2, to at least give them a little bit of a facelift.
I also think that those games from the KOTOR/Neverwinter Nights era of early polygonal 3D - mid don't always tend to hold up very well, if you're not already into the story aspect, writing, combat, etc.

Happened to me about a year ago with Heroes of Might & Magic 3. I was replaying the whole series, I had a whale of a time with HoMM 1 and 2 and when I got 3 I expected it to be even better, like everyone remembers it as the pinnacle of the series, but instead I discovered I liked the older games better this time around.
Part of it was the graphics, somehow the more colorful, fable-like visuals of the first two games aged better in my eyes and keep things more charming. Part of it is probably that I played so much of the first two games in quick susccession I burnt out on the formula. Finally, I feel like 3 perhaps added too much in terms of spells, skills and buildings, and while i's very easy to jump right back into HoMM 1 & 2, 3 takes more time and patience to re-learn.

yep, i loved homm3 back when i was a teenager. as a mid-30s adult i prefer the simplicity and the look of the first two as well.Part of it was the graphics, somehow the more colorful, fable-like visuals of the first two games aged better in my eyes and keep things more charming. fortune_p_dawg: so i've been playing kotor, and while it's not bad per se, i feel like i'm a bit bored. i find myself taking many extended breaks, sighing a lot, etc.
i loved kotor and it's sequel back in 2003/2004 on my xbox. i mean, the combo of star wars & baldurs gate at the time was just awesome. but the game today... just feels a bit sparse & clunky, and they have those charmless early 2000s graphics. the voice acting is good, the stories are good, but... i don't know.
i could play darklands, the ultima series, the might & magic series, the lands of lore series, duke nukem 3d, chrono trigger, planescape torment, etc until my eyes bleed, yet these games are clunky in their own ways too (and in many ways more so than kotor). but for me anyway, for some reason they still hold up.
i wish i understood why i'm bouncing off kotor like a latex filled baloon, and yet have a deep nostalgia for it.
does this ever happen to any of you?
Absolutely. I find my gaming boner has waned over the years. I love some games, but just the thought of starting one of them up turns me off and makes me quit. It's like some music. My favorite songs, I can't bear to listen to most of the time because my mind plays the whole thing out in my head as soon as the opening note hits and I'm left with boredom. Same for many of my favorite games (Chrono Trigger and FFVI, I'm looking at you specifically). There's days when I want to play.... SOMETHING, but actually playing anything is too much of a hassle.i loved kotor and it's sequel back in 2003/2004 on my xbox. i mean, the combo of star wars & baldurs gate at the time was just awesome. but the game today... just feels a bit sparse & clunky, and they have those charmless early 2000s graphics. the voice acting is good, the stories are good, but... i don't know.

I would say it is a matter of getting into the game. I have something similar with Baldur's Gate. I wanted to get knowing the classic game and I also like RPG, fantasy and tactical elements, but when I play it, I cannot get into the game.

The magic of discovery not there. When I play it for the first time theres the storyline I want to discover. Would be fun to replay them but I basically know whats happening next.
Wish I had the luxury of replaying colonization 94', but I can't even find time to play the civ 4 version or the ... alpha centauri remake.
