I was thinking about buying Yooka-Laylee. It goes for $4 on the other store, and went for $4 here a year or two back, but now it's currently $8 here on GOG.

As far as I know it currently is $4 on that other store. So I'm thinking of waiting until I hit that deal price. And this is all mostly so I don't have to deal with an Epic Games login, as the game won't even show a "Press Start" or anything of the sort on bootup but its sequel is fine on that store.
Maybe! But it'd have to be a store like Itch.

petravonkant: Do you have similar thought processes in these situations, or do you shrug and checkout anyway?
Different folks here will have different agendas.

Me, I'm here for DRM-Free games, and so I don't even know what the price is elsewhere, and it hardly matters, as I only purchase at GOG if a game is what I class as fairly priced.

So for me, it isn't about the discount, so much as getting decent value for my money.

I know that some here don't mind paying a little more for a DRM-Free copy of a game. In theory I don't agree with that, but as I don't check the price elsewhere, in reality I just don't know.

Steam for instance, would sell more copies of a game, and so they can probably give greater discounts as an added incentive. Game providers would not be looking to get rich selling games at GOG, and many don't like or provide to GOG or do so with an agenda. Most would rather you buy at Steam or Epic, and the price probably indicates that on occasion.

One can be unhappy that a game is cheaper at a DRM store, but in reality we are just lucky in many cases, that a game is made available at GOG at all. Still, one should be sensible and never pay too much. An over-priced game to me, might as well be DRM.

At the end of the day, it should be about being happy with what you paid, and not whether someone else somewhere, paid less.

P.S. Like many, I have re-bought games at GOG, that I already own on disc. So you can claim I am already paying more to get DRM-Free.

Oh, me too. And I've re-bought games from GOG that I already own on Steam. I'm happy to do that for a DRM-free copy.

I agree with the rest of your post. If it's worth it to the buyer, and DRM-free is a priority, it shouldn't matter that it's cheaper elsewhere with DRM. I suppose, for me, it's not so much annoyance that others are paying less (this is already the case internationally, with different countries sometimes paying lower prices - I'm fine with that) but frustration that some publishers are inconsistent in their pricing and discounts in concurrent sales. I'll try to get over it. :)
Firstly, a bit of (unsolicited!) advice:

When the front page of a store asserts "The best time to buy is now" then you should probably be thinking the opposite!

For me, if the Steam discount is cheaper, and the base price is cheaper due to regional pricing, then the price difference can be more than double in some cases. It's too much for me, I'm not rich and my morals are generally more about real-world stuff than video games.

There are some games I really like that I have gone out of my way to buy on GOG even when owning them on Steam or CD/DVD - either classic games, or indie games mainly where the price is insanely good value for a fantastic game which is obviously a labour of love.

If the price is worth it to me, I buy it.

I'm not gonna waste my time by looking around at stores I will never shop at anyway to price-compare. For me, Steam is the hobbled lesser version anyway, so I just never go there.

But people have varying priorities. Those are just mine.
Why Rent, when you can buy?

Maybe GOG should use this as their catchphrase!
I'm willing to pay a bit more to get a DRM-free version that I actually own.
^^ It's exactly like that - why rent when you can own?

Take Railgrade and Tainted Grail 2 f.ex. the discount was actually higher on Steam but iGOG also had it, so for me the choice was clear.

Then there's the other type of games that I don't care if I "rent" because it really don't matter due to the genre the game¨s in, like War thunder, Warframe, Eve Online, Raft, and PoE.

I've only bought 4-5 games on Steam (not counting F2P games) in the last 8 years or so, so GOG is preferred, however, really wanted a game like The Farmer Was Replaced here on GOG so it looks like I'm going to have to give my 30% to Lord Gabe again. Perhaps it's the kind of game I can detach from Steam...

I personally love Steam because even if they do allow [Steam+something DRM], they're pretty pro-consumer in many ways and they technically excel in every department other than DRM-free offline installers.

All right - slightly different question. You're interested in a game available on GOG. For whatever reason, the publisher hasn't given it a discount on GOG for over two years, but at the other store it's been discounted by 80% a dozen times in the same time frame. Do you give in and pay full price on GOG? (I'm looking at you, Banner Saga trilogy.)

You're question may be slightly different - but your problem is still the same.

You made two statements in your initial post. You said:

- that you will not buy DRM'ed games
and
- that you don't like to pay more than necessary for your DRM-free games.

If both statements are true and not just hyperbole, you're still trapped between the same rock and the same hard place as before.

The only options that you have are:

- to not buy your wanted games at all
- to wait for the devs/publishers to offer the same discount on GOG (when that will be the case (or whether it will happen at all)...who knows?)
- buy your games in the way you prefer: DRM-free (but pay (too) much for them)
- buy your games DRM'ed (but for dirt cheap)

With exception of the first two options (not buying at all or waiting for the equal discount on GOG to appear), you will have to break one of your resolutions (either the "I only buy DRM-free" one or the "I'm-not-willing-to-pay-more-then-necessary" one).

Now - which option will it be?

Edit:
Btw - it's not as if the three "Banner Saga" games would have never been 80% off, here on GOG...

Edit 2:
And apparently the "Banner Saga Trilogy - Stoic Edition" (which is available on Steam) was never available here on GOG to begin with, so your...:

Complaining, that the price of a certain product isn't as constantly lowered in one store, as ist is on another store, when that certain product isn't even sold on that first store?
Come on.

I also have a slightly different question, based on this premise. Is there anyone who is willing to purchase a game at full price? Are all games set at a higher price, knowing that the customer will never pay it?

Yes, I do that for lots of games.

When I consider buying a game, I look at the current price and compare it to the expected enjoyment (and a couple other criteria). I don’t care if the current price is the full one or lower due to a discount.
Yes, I buy it on GOG, so that GOG can use that money to improve its service.
or I don't buy the game.
We now treat GOG same as Steam, Epic, etc that TRY to impose VAT on us as a non-EU location: BOYCOTT!!!
