That looks very familiar. I'm almost positive I played a demo of it from one of those PC Gamer demo disks. But what was it called?

Edit: Hmm, it's not Star Rangers which is probably what I probably thought it was.

Edit 2: Damn, my google fu failed me completely because I didn't go down the results far enough even when I googled a correct but half-remembered game name. Then I cheated to find out that was indeed the name, but too late. Someone else will have to get.

I am absolutely sure, that it is "Renegade Battle for Jacob's Star" ("Renegade Kampf um Jakobs Stern" in German).
It was considered as a not so good "Wing Commander" clone back in the nineties.

Thanks to kultpcgames and his/her site (kultboy.com) I found it again in one of the tests in the German "PC Joker" gaming magazine from April 1995 (see: picture attached).
Furthermore, I found the cockpit view in the mobygames gallery.
