frostcircus: Aren't these pretty much the same game? I thought PR2 was just an advanced version of Patrician 3, or a pseudo-sequel to it.

Its the settings, backdrops, story etc, come into the picture.
Not really, this sort of game lives and dies by its mechanics more than its spectacle, and it's the sort of series that's ore likely to refine itself and add new mechanics with each title.
A better comparison would be to take two years' incarnations of the same sports game. The earlier game is still going to be playable, but after playing a later incarnation, the earlier one's likely to seem a bit crude and unrefined by comparison.
