Yes, it did a few hours ago but now it does not anymore unfortunately (just tried with the same game after getting a no connect for another game). Maybe this is a temp glitch but I doubt it. It seems that GOG simply deleayed the complete deactivation of GOG Downloader :( If anybody stil/again manages to get it to work, I am all ears.

Can't even log on now, so yep looks like they've pulled the plug altogether, obviously not wanting us use a workaround. Am so pissed off with them right now, even more when reading that post from yesterday :

Right so browser? For huge files you'd better make sure protocol is set to TCP and keep everything crossed that there is no corruption and that your provider isn't capping your downloads (which is the case like some Goggers)! Still no checksum provided so no way to verify. If ever there was a need for that this is now, since we supposedly are not forced to use Galaxy and assuming they care enough to avoid people getting screwed by issues with browser downloads!

As for Galaxy, to hell with that! Downloads take far much longer, speed is yoyoing and the more are gonna be FORCED using it on top of regular users, the more it's going to get 'interesting' on the downloading side.

I guess security is only mentioned when it suits them, because yeah, security wise, absolutely no worries at all with 3rd party programs huh!

You made yourself so much work for this workaround - thank you - but unfortunately even this does not work anymore now.

Well since region locks and other poiicies I hardly buy on Gog anymore anyways, except the few games I really want to support or if it's like 2 bucks.
So no won't affect me much, I guess I will just use my own download manager, it is another Kneeshot though.

It's not just browsers(though some of them don't play nice with GOG).....some have crap internet that conks out mid download.

Like it or not, there are issues arising for many users with browser downloading. So I'll point out that when you are getting a file that is GBs in size, and because there is no checksums provided, you are left at the mercy of having corruption. The only buffer you have here with downloading via your browser is using TCP. To some it's no big deal having to re-download GBs, to others it is when they have a monthly download allowance.

no i dont , as there are apps for this and even some browser can continue the download, and i havent seen a crc error in years

Look, am not going to spend time arguing with you on this, you've asked me a question and I've answered. And am very much aware of apps and what some browsers can do and so on. Now If you care to look here in the threads, including those 2 pertaining to GD, you will see that some people DO have that exact corruption issue. And those issues am pretty sure GOG are very aware of them, if not then there is a problem. So you are lucky in not having had errors in years, just like when many of us never had issues with GD when others did. That's computing for you: not all tools work well for everybody, hence the need for viable options.

I suspect most of the issues with GOG Downloader, were either related to using an older version or people using it when the GOG server(s) was heavily impacted by a sale. Or using it, because the GUI was at least low on resources, while using other memory intensive apps. This would be especially so, if GD was not multi-thread aware.

The only time I ever had an issue with it, was because of slow server responses.

I just had to stop and try again later.

Perhaps Galaxy deals better than that or is just better at disguising or notifying about it ... don't know.

What I do know for me, is that Galaxy is crap, and browser links can be troublesome, certainly without using a third party app that allows resuming and queuing and has at least some checking better than the default browser downloader. The irony, when GOG already had something suitable, to have to use a third party option, is staggering.

GOG had two great quality options for downloading the games we bought (depending on your perspective). They have now removed one, in favor of the other, despite how it impacts many of us. They have lost touch with doing the right thing, and believe in ramming what they want down out throats. I have been defending them for ages, because they were maintaining the choices. Now I have to suck eggs, because I have been proved wrong about them. In short, they are not the great store I thought they were, and currently I am going into damage control, for what I see is the inevitable end.

@GameRager - I don't need to provide proof, enough logic over actions and what I know about software and hardware is enough evidence. If GOG have something to counter that, then why don't they do it? That alone speaks volumes.

Disabling the GOG Downloader did not have to happen, it was purely a choice reason, that is based on Galaxy at the very least, but which I personally believe extends beyond that.
