Darvond: I could argue that if DCSS is your high bar, then maybe you need to "get out more".

Feedback from a gaming veteran states that DCSS is basically impossible to get into these days due to changes and overbalances.

I'd rather suggest the Ancient Finland Simulator: Unreal World.

It's a good thing it's a fantasy history then. Think of it like Adventure Mode from Dwarf Fortress, except with a bit more nubbins.

"Magic". Forest spirits and the ilk. There's also build, trade, farming, and other aspects.
