Oops sorry
Well, it has slightly more style of presence than TOME4.

(Which is more an insult for the breadth of staleness that T4 turned out to be.)
We'll take it as a compliment Darvond, TOME has been around much longer and is a beloved game by many roguelike fans.

It is a compliment. The project has only started out and I'm finding the UX/UI a fair bit easier to parse. Given that Tome4 has a laundry list of addons just to fix the issues with things as basic as comparing stats of gear or not spawning with a class weapon, do take note.

Soulash has been around for 2 years and it's been in development for 4 years. We have a working alpha version that can offer about 40 hours of playtime to beat the biggest enemies around, but it's currently in ASCII. We have a working demo with a tileset so it's just a matter of resources to apply it to the rest of the game. We're also very clear about our roadmap, we have 3 clear goals before releasing on Steam in 2022. We're not promising to make the best game ever, but we have a good one and we want it to be even better. :)

If you need to regain trust in the system, Soulash is a sure bet. :) You can ask around on our discord http://discord.gg/Y2dwG4c, there's plenty of people involved with the game for a long time.

Is there a better RPG roguelike than DCSS that is in active development?

ASCII? That's maybe something you should keep. Implement a switch function allowing to freely change between modern UI/GFX and ASCII. I would sure love that! :-)

Definitely, both ASCII and Tileset modes will be available in the game. I've put a lot of effort over the years to make the ASCII a bit more interesting, with animations and 3D effects. :)

I could argue that if DCSS is your high bar, then maybe you need to "get out more".

Feedback from a gaming veteran states that DCSS is basically impossible to get into these days due to changes and overbalances.

I'd rather suggest the Ancient Finland Simulator: Unreal World.

I love Urw, play for like 10 years hehe
I have to admit I tend toward tiles when available, but when not ASCII is still so charming.
