ShadowWulfe: Do tell? Is it possible to buy the whole series on sale somewhere and play it on a private server solo?
no, you can not play it (legally) on solo servers. You have to play on one of Blizzards own MP servers... But if you look around a bit, and make the character on a low population RP server, people tend to leave you alone. Do not make one on a PvP server....
I played WoW back then and occasionally zone into it these days every now and then.

Stuff I really miss from "days gone past":
- the way grouping was done
This is a perfect example of bad, lousy comfort feature in modern WoW. Back then you might have spend quite some time looking for a gourp; but then it meant something. Special snowflakes who left a group as soon and as rude as possible if somebody farted wrong were next to non-existant.

- fluff, pseudofluff removal
to make a fire I need wood to burn and fint & steel to light it up. But "awmygod my inventory" or "awmygod I forgot it because raid is more importand and now cant make food in the more important raid (???)". Whatever the reason for the removal it made the world feel smaller.

-To shoot arrows/bolts/bullets or throw knives I need those object; not have them out of thin air. Also it was cool to find some special magical ammunition.

- Dungeonkeys
Yeah, we cursed when we could not enter; we cursed more when nobody was on or near to open it. I still miss that; it made some places special.

-Stuff mattered more
thats a hard one to hold on to with progressing expansions. But there are sensible ways to expand a game and there is Blizzards style of obliberating everything in a nuclear holocause of the kind that would make Skynets war look like a childs play.

Blizzards crusade against everything thats not the current xpack is IMO very stupid.

Modern stuff I would totally miss:
Transmogging (Ironically most visual equip my chars use are Vanilla with a bit TBC and half a fistful Wrath; I prefer my swords looking like swords ;) ).

Graphic/Animation Upgrades

Class useablility (i.e. Paladins).

Elmofongo: So I have been playing Vanilla World of Warcraft on a private server (Not telling which and where to get it mind you)

Because I really, truly, wanted to see the world of Azeroth before the Catacylsm.

I got my character to level 30 and so far I learned some sad truths:

1. Paladins were not viable tanks for raiding. And I love Paladins and want to be a tank.

2. 2 enemies can kill you if you solo quest.

3. It takes FOREVER to get a mount.

4. Each Zone only has 1 flightpath. There is no flight path from say Goldshire to Stormwind. (Yes in Current WOW there is)

But the world pre cata is Beautiful. Westfall, Loch Lodan, Stranglethorne Vale, Stormwind City

Everything just felt right. This feels like the continuation of Warcraft 3 I was looking for.

Cyberevil: Wow... you mentioned getting a party was a little tougher... are you able to do MC vanilla? I loved the 40 man raids, they were tough though, as everyone when we started them had to pay attention and play up to snuff or it was going to be a wipe... Our little guild got SO lucky we downed Ragnaros on our second "real" raid (one that wasn't just a build up some fire gear and learn the minor bosses raid) Of Course, after that we failed about 6x in a row.. frustrating!
IMO the game was never the same after the Burning Crusade expansion. The starting green gear was as good/better than raid gear from the original game, they got rid of the bigger raids and things just got more craptastic as it went. I quit release day of Cata, was burnt out and didn't want anything to do with it. (also most of my old friends had left by then)
I soloed a LOT back then... started with a Forsaken rogue (Funny I don't remember my original server...ummm... Zul'Jin? ... had to quit it after I had hit 60 because of connection /overcrowding issues)
As far as the Mounts I had one of the first 5 or so Forsaken level 60 mounts. It was awesome sitting in Orgrimmar while everyone /whistled etc at Dread the Rogue.
After that we moved to Thrall and alliance side... which is where i stayed until Cata.
There are several private servers, some will be more popular than others.
Smooth McGroove (of youtubes fame) used to stream raids, one of which was MC, so you can probably get into one, although obviously easier if in the guild.
We've got our own Wrath private server for family and some of daughters friends. I think the max populate has been 7. Its fairly close to the release version, but I'm sure the drop table is a bit off. Its too generous.

Me and wife played from first week of Euro release daily for about 6 years. We used to Play with a friend from the Netherlands. As three person party (hunter, warlock and druid) we took on and beat most dungeons with in the level. But Cataclysm killed WoW for us, our friend left and we quit soon after. We came back a few times but it just didn't have the appeal.

Wrath was the highest point, but also the start of the serious dumbing down of the game.
I hate you for making this thread Elmo, now I'm actually having withdrawal symptoms and actually thinking about returning.

Just think of the reasons you quit last time. Problem solved. :P

whenever my tank got a new helm, the first thing I did was to transmogg it into Bloody Bandanna, much better :)

edit - this is what he looked like last time. Not been on for over a year now....

Ragnaros in vanilla and MC is a huge learning step for first time raiders. My memories of MC still lives on very well today, mostly good memories, had a lot of fun wiping, getting through the obstacles of vanilla gameplay and then getting the first kills of each boss. But seriously though, MC was nothing compared to Naxx40... Even when we had MC, BWL, ZG, AQ20 and 1/2 of AQ40 on farm status, we wiped continuously in Naxx40, even the first boss in every wing took us near 2 weeks of raiding nearly everyday for 4 hours just to get our first kill, I don't even wanna mention ridiculous bosses like The 4 Horsemen.

I played 2 years of WOW as a hardcore player. I became casual shortly after BC came out and when I reached 70 and did heroic 5 mens. Then became on and off player all the way till Cata came out. I quit totally after Cata.
Didn't Crosmando announce, again, that he was done with GOG?

Isn't Blackrock the dungeon where if you die, you need to spend half an hour as a ghost trying to find your corpse?

Does not matter. That mountain itselft is HYPE.

Blackrock Depths and Molten Core together. And Blackrock Spire and Blackwing Lair.

Vanilla introduced instances where the raid instance portal is within a dungeon instance.

That was remvoed for awhile now.
I wish I could've experienced vanilla wow, but internet was simply too prohibitively expensive over here back when it released. Specifically, uncapped connections were obscenely overpriced.

Luckily I managed to get a little bit of gametime in on a custom server, and those first couple of levels were magical. I'm a total sucker for vanilla wow's atmosphere. BC not so much :P

Last time I checked they where still there; just not in use anymore for their original purpose. *sigh* Monuments from ancient times where ppl needed to do shit to go somewhere to get shit and had to be nice about it. ;)

One of the failed comfort addidtions that killed a bit of that worlds charme.
