Can you taste it?
Anyone else having this big Lucas Arts buzz lately? I can almost taste X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter in the air. I also
can't help but notice that at least two other big online distributors have had sales on Star Wars games lately,
which has put that whole LucasArts vibe in the air again. This on the heels of a video interview on Twitch a
week or so ago with GOG folk where they shed some light on progress with bringing LucasArts games to
GOG.com
I can't help but have this sort of adrenaline filled anticipation excitement at the prospects. Normally I would have
picked up a bunch of these games from Steam et al. since some of the sale prices were pretty good lately, but I
kept telling myself "You'll buy it and it'll sit there for a few weeks or months before you get to installing it, and lo
and behold it will show up on GOG and you'll wish you waited." so... I have avoided the temptation and for better
or worse I've decided no matter how good of a sale deal there is on Steam or some reseller out there, I'm going
to hold out for when LucasArts shows up on GOG here and then splurge.
There are like 48 or so Star Wars games for PC! Holy crap! Probably wont get them all mind you, but still... that's
one hell of a lot of geek bread! Not to mention the plethora of other awesome games in their fold.
It's going to be primo awesome to be able to play the old space combat sims with modern programmable flight hardware instead of the junk $20 joysticks I used back in the day. I'm picturing GOG doing a custom animated GOG.com logo with an X-Wing chasing a Tie Fighter in and out through the letters in 3D as a nice promo, sound effects included. HTML5, get on it stat guys! :)
Just think... X-Wing vs Tie Fighter/X-Wing Alliance multiplayer dog fights could end up becoming the ultimate dispute resolution protocol in the forums! Who's with me on that? ;)
So who all out there are biting their fingers with anticipation like I am? Any interesting Star Wars game stories to share?
I remember playing X-Wing Alliance one night with a buddy of mine watching and I screwed up a mission and got all my wingmen killed before we could destroy one of those Star Destroyers or Flagships, I forget which. It was a difficult mission and I wasn't really wanting to redo it from the start all over again but I was basically screwed. Alive, but screwed. I decided to take on the massive ship single handedly, and flew around at a safe distance and began making approaches from different angles to see whether I could even remotely get close enough to it to attempt to do any damage. I discovered that they are weakest on the back side where the thrusters are, and slightly below. You can basically fly right towards the thrusters but not too close... then fly up top a bit and start hammering on the shield generators almost entirely without being attacked. I hammered and hammered and hammered on the shield generators until my buddy got bored and left. He figured I'd get wiped out or give up out of boredom. NFW! I kept hammering on the shield generators until *HOURS* later I knocked them out, then started targetting individual turrets on the ship and flying close enough to attack them and get back to safety. Took every single turret/defense mechanism out on the ship topside and bottom so it was completely defenseless and without shields, then I went out a slight distance, pointed the X-Wing at the destroyer, duct taped the fire button and went around the house doing other things. I had to return to adjust from time to time but eventually after 10 or more hours I destroyed the ship and won the mission. What a grueling battle it was though!
Waiting for LucasArts games to show up here is kind of like waiting to destroy a Star Destroyer all night with a damaged X-Wing and no allies available! :)
