What reason is there for modern Olympics, anyway? World is not at peace during the sports (Syria is still burning), champion athletes of modern era are all pumped in doping (every pro athlete uses special chemicals and drugs) and most importantly, games are no longer symbolic and cultural (ancients were competing for glory and a crown made from flora, not precious metal medals and making millions in cash)! Plus, they always leave the economy of the guesting place completely drained and devastated, right after the end of the event!
You definitely have a point there, on the other hand there are small highlights like the following picture that a North and South Korean athlete took together which embodies the spirit I'm too often missing even in regional matches town vs neighboring town. I never care about who wins against whom in sports as long as there's fair play and a good performance.

Anyway, such pictures don't directly change anything but they can change minds, and minds can lead to a change of things over time.

catpower1980: Do you gave a damn about the current drama about the use of drugs (google Camille Lacourt)?

Tyrrhia: That was just bad sportsmanship. Does he really think that the four swimmers that preceded him were drugged? He just created this drama because, this time, others were better than him.
And above it all, it's not as if anyone believes he is clean anyway.

As the disgusting Lilly King/Yulia Efimova event. I understand that the audience, being as dumb as they usually are, eat into the narrative they've been fed..., but the other athletes should know better.

Anyway, it's so typical for the USA athletes to build and market themself with that kind of pointing fingers narrative. At least in cycling, back in the day, competitors never did that with doping positives. This reminds me of that Carl Lewis dude, blaming dumb Ben Johnson of cheating. And it worked for him -well, he is american, so he has that huge advantage-; everyone remembers Ben Johnson as a cheater while the also cheater Lewis is one of the greatests.

Bottom line, I can deal with the cheating, but I can't deal with hypocrites and the heroes and villains narrative they're selling us.

Because the olympics has been a war themselves for a long time now. As the pinnacle of sports, it's the best platform to assert your superiority upon the others. And that's politics.

Yup. If they really cared as much about anti-doping as they want the people to think they do, they could create an international and impartial drug-testing platform instead of relying on each delegation to police their own athletes with varying punishments and then whining about it. The reason nothing is changing and the current situation will stay the same is because it can be used to blame Russia and China, two of the biggest "enemies" of the US.

My good people, my good people, what are you saying?!?!? All athletes do drugs. There are entire CHAINS of stores, full of special athlete products, be they drugs that can only be injected, horrible stuff that is taken through the digestive system, like powders pumped up in chemically processed nutrients to be dissolved in water or tea-like base, even the innocent looking protein-bars and other simpler in nature, yet still PROCESSED, GARBAGE, TRASH for the body.

Many of those products have been accused for deaths, chronic health problems, the most usual and frequent of which STERILITY and loss of sperm potency (no ability to have children), terrible things gone wrong with normal body functions past a certain age and of course, serious problems of varying nature before even fifties!

Dope-check and dope control is a joke, a FACADE! It is not meant to BAN ENTIRELY chemicals used in an athlete, but to allow CERTAIN TYPES/BRANDS of those horrible products to be considered legit for use and unanimous usage, plus to count and restrict athletes who overdid the stuff and have amassed past a certain level of the active components inside their body!

Modern Athletes are CHEMISTRY ENHANCED ZOMBIES! Unless they are nerdy, rich bastards, buying expensive natural supplements (royal jelly, bee pollen), highly nutritious food (honey, fruit) and base their diet in natural, healthy style, with smart food combinations (protein based, calcium based, carbohydrates based, etc). And still, even after all this, natural and hobbyist athlete cannot even hope to compare against pros, fully pumped up with specially designed drugs, whom also get "enhanced" not only more effectively, but far cheaper, too. Well, at least i have my virility intact and my health always at peak levels... Wouldn't trade that even for gold medal, olympic championship, 1 million euro and ten babes for one night with me.

So which is the Olympic event that works kind of like Deathrace 2000? When does that air?

That was the downhill bike racing. I think that's over.

I would actually watch the Olympics if they had a sport similar to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ceegnWSENQ
When did they get rid of head gear in boxing?

Looks like they also changed the scoring system.
An Egyptian judoka refused to shake hands with his Israeli opponent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwfnnRoyZOk

Really hoping that he will be severely punished for violating both Olympic and judo values. But I doubt that will be the case because he's coming from an Arab country, especially since a spokesman for the international judo federation has already said:
This is already a big improvement that Arabic countries accept to fight Israel.
They wouldn't want to be wrongly accused of racism, now would they? Also, I find it most ironic that his first name is Islam, much like the religion that is currently begging for the West to accept multiculturalism—you probably couldn't even make that up!

Because they didn't want to offend all the Zika fighters with tiny heads who couldn't wear it.
On behalf of Americans everywhere, sorry for Hope Solo.

That bitch needs to keep her mouth shut.

Eh, she does the star thing. Which is all she seems to be lately. Remember several years ago, even 10+ when I first watched women's football tournaments and realized that hey, there are some good teams out there, saying she's two leagues above any other goalkeeper. While for the other positions there were teams that were just good overall, or at least in many places, she seemed basically the only one worth holding the GK spot anywhere. A few years ago, there were finally a few other decent ones. Now from what I saw in the Olympics matches, the US needs a new GK because she was rather just sitting there, living off past glory.
But the media's still hooked on what she has to say, and she always did like to shock with that, recall various (usually quite funny) statements during other major tournaments too, even previous Olympics. So she does what she still can I guess.

And this one about how Sweden played isn't exactly wrong, is it? But, you know, who wouldn't do the same against the US?
But what does need to be said is that Sweden may have won in added time there. I mean, they had a perfectly valid goal there, overruled for off-side when there was none when the pass came and then ball actually was redirected off the foot of an US defender (probably wouldn't have reached the attacker otherwise anyway) so no way it could have been.
Then again, not so sure the US's goal scored just before that wasn't also valid. But that was a hard call, on both off-side and attacking foul. Sweden's was clear as day.

PS: Reminds me, why's there such poor coverage of women's football at the Olympics? At least here, quite sure all of 1 match was broadcast, France - New Zealand, bit odd choice. And I just managed to watch US - France and US - Sweden now otherwise. Granted, didn't try for others in the group stage, but meant to watch the QFs and couldn't even find a way for China - Germany. Then yeah, it was Romania - Spain in the men's doubles tennis final (darn that was close, 4-3 and serve in final set, lose 3 games in a row and the match... ah well) during Canada - France so didn't even look, and then just forgot about the last one, but still.
Rather odd, seeing as it has the proper teams, not whatever could be gathered under age rules and considering that clubs don't need to allow players there for the men's. (On which note, thinking the men's football tournament would be a good way to still leave something of the initial idea of the Olympics in the modern ones and make it amateur only. Might as well...)

Oh, so that's what it meant.

Yesterday, when I looked at the trending things on Twitter, I saw Hope Solo but didn't click on it because it didn't interest me. And even with my very small knowledge of the Star Wars franchise, I thought it was a wordplay with Han Solo. Turns out a wordplay would have been better than her.
