Good luck with that first one. Meant to do the same thing and got stuck there, the lack of saving except at inns made me not dare do much of anything, kept saying I'll continue, didn't, eventually "formally" abandoned it, but years had passed and any resolve to do that got worn down, so didn't even start 2nd yet, though you should be able to save anywhere, and also have automap, in that.
So if you can deal with that, go for it. If not, maybe cut your losses early and skip straight to 2 or even 3.

Oh, by the way, Oleg recently went through and reviewed the series on MobyGames. Bar the first one, he didn't want to try that one either.
