kaboro: Haha Zeogold, thank you from bringing some light hearted comments, i tend to get too gloomy too fast :P
Now whats the meaning of "playing with the siren"? Sorry my knowledge of slang and cultural reference is not up to snuff
Oops sorry im an idiot, the siren of your police car lol ok
No, I arrested one of those weird pretty singing ladies for disturbing the peace. I don't care how nicely she yodels, nobody disturbs my afternoon nap. I handcuffed her, but it appears those wings on the back of her are prehensile, and she brought a deck of cards with her. Now, either you stop playing Texas Hold 'Em or you start winning and give me half the money.
my country is "back".

apparently.

zeogold: It seems like foreigners/tourists are always the quickest to point out how nice your country is. I feel like there's some sort of lesson to be learned from this.
Indeed. Wise words.

zeogold: I'm a Christian myself. Just as long as we all don't start hating on each other about our differences as usual, the statistics don't really matter to me.
I have no reason to hate anybody for his beliefs.
I was merely stating that i refuse the concept of judging someone as inherently evil just because he is an atheist or agnosticist. In fact, all the atheists i know are pretty altruistic and genuinely nice people.

Klumpen0815: Greed has risen from a sin to an ideology, hasn't it?
It's only logical, that modesty has fallen from the status of a virtue to become a sin.
Those are the long-term consequences of consumerism and show that our society is facing an age of decadence.

If I had to sum up this place with one word, it would be: variety

From the landscape to the architecture, foods, dialects, attitudes, weather, habits, slang, and more, there is a wide variety from one end to the other. And that doesn't count government stuff, which can also vary quite a bit.

That's why I'm not fond of generalizing by nationality. Yes, we're Americans, but I don't think that implies a whole lot beyond the citizenship stuff. It certainly doesn't mean that people in New Mexico are just like those in New York.

I was actually just talking about that in a different country-trait thread. Really, nearly every state/region here IS like its own country.
A saying from northern Kerala(state, not country) : ''If you see a snake and a southerner (=person from south Kerala); first kill the southerner and then the snake.''
Probably not practiced today I think.
In order to be more positive:
We have excellent beer for at least since the middle ages, everybody in the world seems to agree on this and having tested many brands from all around the world, I still do too.
Even the alcohol free beer here is great (depending on the brand of course).

What is less well known is, that Germany has some of the oldest and diverse documented martial arts in the world, even most Germans don't know anything about it and since they usually don't care for their own culture or straight out despise it, those martial arts are actually more often revived / kept alive by Americans, Czechs and Polaks, although especcially the latter two share a common culture with Germans anyway.

There's such a thing as alcohol-free beer?

Many different brands around here, not only the "Pils" kind but also "Hefeweizen".
Some are really good and since I completely stopped drinking alcohol many years ago, I'm quite happy about that.
Athletes drink it too, because it's very isotonic without the negative effects of the alcohol.

I'm conflicted on whether to congratulate you or make yet another cruel joke at your expense, so I'll do both. Over here, I'll say congratulations.

XD Go ahead and make the joke. :D I am big on telling people I'm sober because I fucking hate being sober and I want everyone to know it! :P When I go through hell I want the recognition. XD

If you insist:
What, you mean the way you act is just...you? Not because of some intoxicated condition? Criminy, that's scary.

That's the truth of it, and it extends to all of those different ways. I can safely lump my area (Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the UP) together fairly well but you go much beyond that and there are distinct defining differences. And even with that, the rural areas are quite a bit different from the city areas.

And that's a good thing, because it's possible to find a place where one fits without having to cross national borders. But it also makes it really difficult to talk about this country as a monolithic thing, because that's not at all what it's like.
