THartmann9374: Hello,
Just curious. Will downloads be faster later? I know that GOG just had a big sale recently which servers might be swarmed. It took a long time to download Police Qiuest and I hate to see how long it will take to download Game of Thrones, Tales of Borderlands, and big games, hehe.
Thanks, Tom
Downloads can be slow for a variety of reasons:
User side related:
- The user has a slow or unreliable Internet connection.
- The user has other programs downloading data such as bittorrent or other downloaders running
- The user's Internet connection is shared by other people in the household or neighbourhood (shared Wifi for example) and others are using it to download, watch movies or other high-bandwidth usage.
Internet infrastructure:
- The user's ISP or some other Internet infrastructure in between the user and GOG's servers are throttling/limiting speed.
- The user's country has restrictions in place which interfere with the user's ability to connect to GOG (ie: China)
GOG side:
- GOG's servers that the user connects to are under load or experiencing technical difficulties. This is not common in general, but becomes more common during big sales and other promotions and events that cause traffic load spikes.
Of the above, obviously GOG can't do anything about problems due to the user's own issues/restrictions/usage, and they can't do anything about ISPs or other Internet infrastructure that they do not control. On the GOG side of things, the webservers used to serve the website are different than the ones that host the game downloads offered through the website and GOG Downloader programs, and the webservers used by GOG Galaxy are completely separate from that. GOG uses CDNs such as edgecast.net for game download content on Galaxy for example.
Since it is distributed globally, different users in different geographical regions will connect to completely different servers when downloading, so performance problems that some users experience may not occur for users living elsewhere for example.
The best thing to do is to try examine your local network and Internet traffic to ensure it isn't being choked off by downloads or other applications that can suck bandwidth, being sure to check all computers in the household, and make sure there is no malware on them also as that can suck up bandwidth silently. Next is to try to ensure the slowdown is not on the ISP side using tools like traceroute or other diagnostics that are more comprehensive, or to contact the ISP directly about it unless one is sure it is not an ISP related problem.
Finally, if one believes it is a problem with GOG's servers, then contact GOG technical support to let them know about the problem so they can investigate it and fix it if there is a real problem going on.
Hope this helps.
