I've been playing (and plan to keep playing) Medieval 2 Total War. I played Rome Total War, and it was awesome to get flashbacks of epic sieges. But I'm wondering these days if there's a bigger selection than that. My ideal criteria would be:

- A smaller world map. Nothing wrong with M2's, it's just I already know the world, so a fresh map or fantasy setting is more interesting and new.
- Customizable names for generals? Is there a game where you can control a whole family, name them, and then send them out from your region to conquer others (i.e., not based on history)?
- Any good sci-fi strategy games?

I will say I don't like Starcraft, Warcraft, or Warhammer. Just not interested in those. I want something really cool and new, maybe indie. Also I'm not into matchmaking or ranking at all.

Thanks!

Are RTS games out? StarCraft and Warcraft are the typical RTS titles but you said the reason you aren't really into them is matchmaking, but there are some (albeit few) RTS games out there that aren't about matchmaking.
here are games that i would suggest in terms of gog.com:

Battle Worlds: Kronos
Xenonauts
Conquest: Frontier Wars
Defcon
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
O.R.B.: Off-World Resource Base
Spacecom
World in Conflict
Planetbase
Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds
Meridian: New World
Deadnaught
Star Wars Empire at War
Startopia (has a huge chunk of management tho)

and always keep the classics in mind: Civilization, Empire Earth and ofc Command and Conquer even if the last one isnt on gog

could probably come up with some more depending on platform and more detailed specifics from your side

Perhaps Ground Control?
Sorry, it doesn't HAVE to be sci-fi. That was an off question. I actually would prefer if it were fantasy. Something like:

Game of Thrones rts (role-play each family, etc)
Dune rts (control Arrakis and manage spice, etc.)

Anything like that? Something with a long intended campaign, and a setting, but then full customization of characters/generals? (within that setting)

full customization + long campaign is pretty much impossible i think, atleast i havent seen one like that

for fantasy setting:

Alien Nations
Battle Realms + Winter of the Wolf
Eador: Masters of the Broken World
Majesty 2
The Nations
SpellForce
Heroes of Annihilated Empires

Banished (historical setting tho)
I got really addicted to King Arthur from here on GOG. It's a bit of a hybrid Role Playing and RTS. Some people have been frustrated with it, because they found the game hard at times, but I really enjoyed it...it does make you think before you just run roughshod all over the map...you'll be facing enemies from all sides before long that way, lol. Check out some LP's on YouTube first to see if it might be your cup of tea. I really liked ME2 as well, and this was the game I went to after that (well, actually after I also played the Third Age mod for ME2) Anyway, something else for you to check out
Nice. Thanks for the all the links! It's cool seeing what's out there. i really like these ones:

Stronghold HD
Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic
Children of the Nile

Has anyone played any of those? I realized I don't want something too dated, I'm in the mood for a casual experience.
Master of Magic is still one of the absolute best.

It's been a while, but yeah, Age of Wonders:SM was a lot of fun...I sunk a lot of hours into that :) I actually enjoy(ed) it more than the newer AOW3
Take a look at Europa Universalis 3 Chronicles. Or maybe Alpha Centauri for sci-fi stuff.

It is...but be prepared to use your brain ;-). Also, one cool thing I liked, was Strategic Points that you could (should) try to capture, that gave you special abilities/spells and helped to decrease the enemies moral. Of course, the enemy will go about trying to capture and hold them too...but that's half the fun ;-)
It's not new, but it's one of the best TBS/RTS mix ever: Lords of the Realm 2

I love this game, I've played it tons :D Have actually been playing it this week. Was debating between Rome 2 or Attila because of the sale but watching the videos just made me want to play this again :3
