MarkoH01: I am curious. As many of you might know "The Long Dark" is not available on GOG anymore. Some assumed the reason for this could be the new piblisher who might not like the DRM-free approach. Since I know saw that it is on the list of Steam games that can be run without Steam I was wondering if this still is the case.

muntdefems: I could check the Linux build later tonight, if you want. :)
Would be interesting, yes. Even more interesting would be if the game would still be DRM-free when the redux update in December has arrived.

Hero Siege despite being in the list in fact is NO Steam-free at all. It even doesn't work with various Steam emulators (SmartSteamEmu, Lume Emu), only having been installed in proper Steam folder with Steam installed and running.

As it has been said already, such things might happen after a game got updated. You might want to try an older version of the game following the instructions here.

I just wanted to prevent others from making my mistakes in believing the List blindly :)

The list might not be incorrect you still might be able to play the game without it requiring Steam - but you'd need to rollback to an older version.

Unfortunately, there's no notes in the List that inform that a game is no longer Steam-free after some updates. So I'd want my post would be such a note.

And playing an older version of a game just to have it Steam-free - I don't think this be a good option.

Of course that is helpful. It would also be helpful to figure out which update added the DRM.

Depends on what the update(s) did imo. Anyway - figuring out the latest version that still works would be a great thing so this could be added to the list as well.

This I can't clarify, sorry. I just purchased this game to play it Steam-free and had to request refund. Version is 2.5.2.2 (and it is already upgraded again up to 2.5.3.0 now with no change in Steam-dependency).

So at least we know that ver. 2.5.2.2 is not DRM-free anymore.

Yesterday I couldn't do it, but I've just checked it now: the current Linux build, v1.39 (from November 1st, Manifest ID=3029164260902052391) is still DRM-free and works out of the box without the Steam client. :)

Let's hope the upcoming Redux update doesn't change anything in that regard.
New game: 39 Days to Mars doesn't need the client on Linux if you apply the 'steam_appid.txt trick'.
The just released Underworld Ascendant can be run without Steam. This have not just confirmed by the devs themselves but also just tested by me on Win7/64.
The Windows version of Train Valley can be run without Steam on Wine. It is probably a good idea to force the game not to use the Steam clound with the commandline argument --nosteamcloud.

The Linux version can be run without Steam, but it cannot save progress without access to the Steam cloud.

Dragon's Dungeon: Awakening is completely free of Steam contamination, there's only one file named GoogleMobileApp.ext that have to be deleted, and you're fine.

Win7-32, as always.

muntdefems: · Closure [*]

· Frozen Synapse [*]

[*] I wonder whether these games also require the 'steam_appid.txt trick' on the other OSs, or are no longer DRM-free either on them. New tests on Windows and macOS would be welcome.
Closure will work out of the box, but you won't be able to save your progress without the client. Frozen Synapse will not work at all.

Kung Fury: Street Rage will work without the Steam client, provided you use the steam_appid trick. Tested on Windows 10.
