What can I do if my game crashes to desktop?

We've gotten reports of a game-breaking bug in Warhammer 40:00 Chaos Gate. While we work on implementing a solution to the issue, here's what you can do get back on track in the meantime:

If your game crashes when you select to start a mission, please make sure that it is installed to a simple location. The installation path can only have 2 subfolders and 35 characters total. For example, the default installation directory will work:

C:/GOG Games/WH40K Chaos Gate

Stay tuned for more updates, and don't hesitate to get in touch with our support team if your issues persist.

Tarm: I'm a Swede and Sweden is also logged in the vodka belt. Your response is noted and filed as "wrong". ;)

thefifthhorseman.229: Trust me. *whistles while polishing polearms*
-Suedes Attack!.

Edit: That's what came up when I goggled "suede attack". Suede being a common missname for Swedes. That was awesome. I want that jacket now. :)

rtcvb32: Hmmm it occurs to me Linux/Unix systems wouldn't have this issue, one of the main reasons is there's a change-root (chroot) ability where you could forcibly limit and contain a program to a smaller subset of your filesystem... Which would be heavily helpful... Or if you are using DOSBOX it does the same thing when mounting folders/drives...
I actually run my games in a chroot. Essentially, I can run a Debian system even when the host is running Gentoo. (The other way around, running Gentoo under Debian, is actually a good way to try out Gentoo and a first step toward actually installing Gentool; just extract (as root) a stage 3 tarball into a new directory.)

You may need to bind mount certain directories in order to get X11, audio and input working, but that setup actually works quite well. It's not as secure as running it in a container or virtual machine. (The problem with running it in a VM is 3D acceleration, which modern games (even those in retro styles) tend to require these days for decent performance.)

I remember having security questions along those lines a while back, then i came across a nice little filesystem that was being developed back in 2002 which is known as SquashFS. The kernel module is literally read-only and you create filesystems by using an archiving utility. Using this you can create a mini or full OS to mount with, then mount on top of it the different features you need. Only a few select folders would need to actually have write access (/home, /etc).

Yeah i was more based on space concerns at the time, but knowing a virus/malware can't infect your OS gives you a little more peace of mind :)
I get this error: 'Could not load the Animation File'
win 7x64

Pheace: Well if they moved into the 90's and actually put a forum link on the storepage ... seriously, what's their reluctance doing that? Of course the game subforums aren't frequented often as a result.
Yeah, that would help. The forums are rather hidden away, at least to new users not familiar with how things work here.

Tarm: Easier to moderate only one forum? Honestly that's the only reason I can think of.
Hah hah... Good one.

That was a joke, right? Since you were talking about moderation... on a GOG forum. :P

GOGs general forum is actually very moderated. It's done by us.

Also moderating a forum is a lot more than you see as a user or visitor. Moderators spend most of their time not poking their fingers in our user soup but instead watching for stuff they don't want here. They find something that's not for here they do mod things.

I'd say GOGs forums is very moderated. They work and aren't clogged by the filth of the internet.

Edit: Spelling and stuff.

True enough, but it's certainly not "over-moderated" like so many other sites, and that's a good thing.

You'd think they want users to post to the sub-forums, though, otherwise what's their point?

This is a site for a rather big company. The question isn't about over-moderation. It's about rules. GOG simply have sensible rules for their forum. Much like CD Project Red and GOG have sensible rules for DRM.

On that sub forum thing. As I said before the only reason I can think of is that if they get more popular it'll get harder for moderators to watch. That's something to think about with the number of GOG employees and number of game forums...
Lol
i think thats the most ironic crash solution we ever had.

Because by default gog installer has path
c:\program files\gog games\game name

Thank you for solution though.

Odd... I'm getting c:\gog games\game name consistently.
Making this type of thing a news article, eh? I mean, offering solutions to problems is very nice, but this is just strange. :P

I still remember (that was not so long ago) when you *had* to do this to run 32-bit games on a 64-bit OS. I think I spent more time getting NWN to run that actually playing it ;)

Tarm: Wasn't eight characters maximum in the early PC games era?
avatar
evilnancyreagan: actually I think 6 was the maximum length for a filename back in the DOSdays

I was a Mac kid tho so, what few early PC experiences I do have are pretty fuzzy
Nope, filenames in DOS were 8.3 chars long.
high rated
Well this is silly. : )

So here's what happened: We just got a newfangled feature in GOG Galaxy where we can post directly to a single game's news feed. The idea here was to get this info out ASAP to everyone who opens the game through the client - it's the first time we've ever done it, so I guess none of us considered what would happen when somebody leaves a comment.

I've made sure that it's now a lot more clear what we're talking about!

>>"Crash to Desktop - Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate"
I found solution for my situation with "Could not load the Animation File" error and crash on the load first mission
I changed resolution of my Desktop on 1280x768 (like in game settings) and it help.
