tinyE: This whole thing reminds me of a brilliant young artist I knew a few years ago.
He was all set to go off to New York and attend some prestigious art school, but you see, he also loved surfing, and he wanted to know if he had a future in that.
So he took the winnings from a local surf competition and flew down to Hawaii, to surf the North Shore!
At first things didn't go very well. On his first time out his board got snapped in two, and when he got back to shore he saw that all of his stuff, including his really expensive art supplies, had been stolen!
After bumming around for a while he managed to find a place to stay with a local reclusive surf board maker who taught him how to make surf boards as well as teach him how to "soul surf" and not just "shred", like the local big name yokels. During this time he also used his skills as an artist to design a new logo for the board maker's brand!
Eventually he got so good at surfing he was asked to enter a competition, but his mentor, the surf board maker, screamed at him, telling him that competitions were just for "shredding" and weren't legit, but the guy entered anyway, and he got to the finals! Unfortunately one of the big name surfers in the competition cheated and kept him from getting the final wave he needed to win. However, the kid wasn't mad, he just waved it off, and decided to fly to New York, go to that school, and become a famous artist.
Isn't that a great story!?
