Yes, is that time of the year when the french are celebrating 14th of July, their National Day and the fall of Bastille.

So, have fun, people.
I've always thought the French revolution was overrated, I mean they had a Republic for what, a few years and then it just went straight back to monarchy
"They seek him here, they seek him there
Those Frenchies seek him everywhere
Is he in heaven or is he in hell?
That demned elusive Pimpernel"
C'est la fête de la République! ^^
WE SURRENDER! :D

Crosmando: and then it just went straight back to monarchy
If you do a little reading on the subject, you'll see that monarchy was never quite the same after that.

Even so, after all the bloodshed and suffering it's a little depressing to see a guy coming and declaring himself Emperor, Napoleon ought to be one of the most vilified men ever yet he still gets glorified.

Waterloo, a continent-wide coalition, massive bloodshed, repeat a rinse (twice) and people like Vladimir Putin and Boris Johnson still get glorified. History lessons are slow to drip in. :P

Besides, the republic you mention was never truly democratic or non-authoritarian. Hey, how many things do you get right on your first try? ;)

For people who can read French, an article today on the real story of the fall of the Bastille:
http://www.lepoint.fr/histoire/prise-de-la-bastille-2-fous-4-faussaires-et-un-pervers-liberes-14-07-2016-2054393_1615.php

Funny last paragraph on the freed prisoners: they were only seven. Four accused of forgery who got away. One incestuous nobleman went back to its province. And two madmen were sent back into the custody of an asylum. That's quite myth-breaking :o)

Thanks for the article. Definitely interesting. Even more interesting were the comments. Took a few notes from them about some books and historians that i wasn't familiar with.
Was about to say 'congratulations', but then I heard the news.

So sorry...
+1, Hang in there France, this was a dark day.

Edit: I'll make a separate topic since this doesn't feel like the right place to discuss this, the topic being what it is.
