Well this thread covers more genres than just growling death metal. :P

But I see your point, that's what I used to think, too. I used to think all metal was nothing but satanic screaming, but after finding some bands with lyrics I liked(I had to look up the lyrics to understand them), I made myself listen to it and found out it wasn't so bad. It took a while, but I can usually understand the lyrics without looking them up now.
Although, there are a lot of bands with really bad vocalists that nobody can understand...
