Today, we bid farewell to the legendary post-apocalyptic 2D classics.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we needed to pull the three classic Fallout games, that is Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics, from sale and remove them from our DRM-free catalog. These classic titles have been with us since day one, that is for over 5 years now, and they were always one of the highlights of the selection of games that we offer. There are very few titles in the history of computer role-playing games, that have had so much impact on the gaming landscape, players' expectations, and even the popular culture. The iconic setting, the memorable quotes, and unparalleled amount of fun and challenge these games provide--it's all burned in the memory of a whole generation of gamers. Probably even more than just one generation. It was an honor to have you here, Fallout. Take good care of yourself out there, try not to mistake a gecko for G.E.C.K. (not even remotely the same thing!), and remember to take your Rad-X pills!

All those who acquired Fallout, Fallout 2, or Fallout Tactics on GOG.com prior to the date of removal (that is before Tuesday, December 31st 2013, at 3:59PM GMT), will still be able to download the games' install files (as well as the bonus content) via the "My Games" section of their user accounts. Gift-codes for these three games acquired in our recent giveaway are no longer valid. However, if you own a gift-code for any or all of them that was purchased outside of the said giveaway, you'll still be able to redeem it in the foreseeable future.

We sincerely apologize for all the inconvenience this situation may have caused you. We invite you to browse through 671 other fantastic titles offered in our DRM-free catalog of the best games in history, and we wish you a Happy New Year of gaming!
You're a classic... and you have to leave.
though there are many precious old games here on GOG, when it comes to retro gaming Fallout's were always the TOP for me, regrettably not much the first game because it was crashing so much I almost didn't finish it, however I always considered Fallout series to be more entertaining than all the Dungeons and dragons RPGs, which appear to be the biggest magnet for old players to sign up here
A sad day indeed. The Fallout and HoMM games were what brought me to GoG initially, it doesn't feel quite right Fallout not being here. Hopefully this just means that GoG will be trying harder than ever to sign a contract with Bethesda/Zenimax, and we'll see not only a return of Fallout but also gain some Morrowind, Daggerfall and Arena that work on modern systems without massive tooling around. I never played Daggerfall or Arena, due to aforementioned tooling, but Morrowind represents one of the most important gaming experiences of my life. Plus, if they sign Bethesda then they also get Id, and who doesn't think that Doom, Wolf3D and [especially] Commander Keen are seriously missing from the catalogue? So, at least there's a possible silver lining to this stormy cloud over GoG.

Kristian: Sure there are implications, just not the one he mentioned. One obvious implication is that Bethesda has so far not signed a deal with GOG regarding the Fallout titles.
Well... Yes, obviously.

Daggerfall now has DaggerFallSetup that installs about as easy as a GOG game :)
"Maybe the one who is waiting for you,
Will prove untrue,
Then what will you do?"

This is probably the only time a game being removed from the catalog has brought a tear to my eye. But if GOG does get the rights to distribute back, will those that owned the game be able to download it again, without having to re-purchase it? I mean $6 is still a drop in the bucket, but it would be nice to know.

Ehm... it seems we won't be losing the right to download in the first place.

Thanks for that bit of info! Last time I tried it required a whole bunch of emulation know-how to achieve. Seriously though, part of me just feels like they belong in my GoG list, which to some degree I treat as a museum of classic (in a high-brow sense) games.

You aren't the only one :) I know a lot of our community members that have that same feeling about their game shelves :)
It is most likely because interplay doesnt have the rights to sell them anymore, and bethesda has yet to sign the contracts with GOG. No doubt within a few months it will be back up.

Is there any reason to think Bethesda will sign such a deal?

Gilliatt: Thank you very much GOG for giving them for free before they were removed ! I'm happy to have all 3 of them in my library !

Now I can only hope you'll be able to sign a contract to get the rest of the series in the near future !
Don't forget to thank Interplay, they're the ones who allowed GOG to give them away for free, probably to spite Bethesda after they lost the fight over the rights :)

Everyone is completely overreacting over this. For one Bethesda didn't have them pulled Interplay did since they are no longer able to legally sell the game. Second people crying at Bethesda owning the rights forget that Interplay was going bankrupt and if Bethesda hadn't bought the rights it would have been an even deeper legal rights mess with some bank owning the Fallout IP. Finally this has happened before with Bethesda when Zenimax bought id. Activision owned the rights to publish id games until Zenimax bought id. Now Quake 4 is on Steam and every other id property is being sold by Bethesda with no problems. It will happen eventually.

JasmineMoldovia: Will we ever know why these 3 had to be removed?
avatar
Lane: Interplay's rights to sell Fallout 1/2/Tactics expires today, and apparently Bethesda has not contracted with GOG to continue to offer them here.
Thanks for clearing this up! As said by staticblast above: Bethesdaaaaaaaaa!!!

I see. Well, still, I'm backing them up, just in case.
