Syphon72: I don't fit the definition of incels and disagree with the censoring. Why do people use these buzz words?
"You must show that a man is wrong before you start explaining why he is wrong. The modern method is to assume without discussion that he is wrong and then distract his attention from this (the only real issue) by busily explaining how he became so silly. In the course of the last fifteen years I have found this vice so common that I have had to invent a name for it. I call it "Bulverism". Some day I am going to write the biography of its imaginary inventor, Ezekiel Bulver, whose destiny was determined at the age of five when he heard his mother say to his father—who had been maintaining that two sides of a triangle were together greater than a third—"Oh you say that because you are a man." "At that moment", E. Bulver assures us, "there flashed across my opening mind the great truth that refutation is no necessary part of argument. Assume that your opponent is wrong, and explain his error, and the world will be at your feet."

Crosmando: Are they gonna do Chronicles and Last Revelation too?
This release seems to be selling decently (50-100k on Steam according to Steamspy), so I wouldn't be surprised.

Personally I hope that, after LR and Chron are done, they do an above-and-beyond remaster/reworking of Angel of Darkness - certainly with fan involvement like this release.

Syphon72: Those two probably need a remaster more than the original trilogy
In what ways specifically?

I agree. I'm happily married and I disagree with the censorship. I don't see why there's a need to start throwing around labels at those we disagree with.

Time4Tea: It doesn't seem very faithful to the dark, gloomy, foreboding atmosphere of the original games, imo.
Funny that most of this may have been just due to original hardware restriction. That said, in many places TR1's classic graphics looks way too bright actually for where the player is.

I've been switching between classic and remastered look quite frequently just to see how different the rooms are, and the remastered wins every time hands down. So far I'm still playing TR1 and just got to Natla's mines, and they did a phenomenal job updating everything really: quite detailed 3d models replacing simpler old ones or others that were nothing but pixelated 2D sprites. Also the replaced textures in many places feature so much more detail in their high resolution, which is particularly noticeable in Egypt.

Not only that, but the new and much improved lighting provides the game with a much more authentic feel as it gives levels a much more atmospheric mood in comparison to the original's look. I particularly love how they tastefully added natural light filtering into spaces through open skylights, grates, or cracks in walls/ceilings without feeling out of place. Compare that to the previously overly (and mystifyingly) bright rooms and their oftentimes drab looking ceilings of old.
Attachments:
I might not be the biggest TR fan in the world but I'm glad I bought these remasters. They put a lot of effort and love into those, even if it's not perfect. I hope they will improve the controls a bit though. "Modern controls" also imply strafing which Lara can't do at the moment, that would be a nice feature.

P-E-S: ...
Ok, I'll admit those screenshots look a lot better. However, the images on GOG's store page don't show any of that. The lighting in those shots looks frankly atrocious.

It seems like at least they could have done a better job with the marketing.

Time4Tea: If others like them then fair enough, but I don't think they're for me. I'm happy, just as long as they don't take down the originals.
And for the record, despite all the positive things I had to say about these remasters earlier in the thread, I am in full agreement with your last sentence there. I would be really, really upset if they ever took away the originals. I might be happy with these remasters now, but I can totally imagine a day when I want to play the originals exactly as they were intended. Pure and unaltered. For me, that should remain GOG's primary goal. These remasters and such are simply a nice option to have for those who want it, and to me, not meant as a replacement for the originals, which should always be available.
The "originals" of the Classics (1996 engine) are on the console, not PC. ON PC those games has never been optimized for an are lackluster. It has been changed on Angel of Darkness and up, who are supreme on PC.

However, the remaster is surely a nice PC version, with any addons included, finally able to even make it smooth and enjoyable on PC.

I know, many people say the first Playstation is a "pixelstation" with polygon issues... well exactly those failures i actually find adorable, the same way i find a imperfect but authentic human adorable. So i have no intention removing those "imperfections" from the original... However, the PC version is some other/another "interpretation" which is not anymore original, yet it comes very close to this feeling with more tech count... and mainly able to keep the original art count as well. Most important to me was to take over the accurate colors, which now is much better compared to the "old PC version" which was never accurate in colors at all. So, the remaster is a step up and to me the first PC version worth playing with the unique traits of PC... not trying to be something different.

Ultimately not a bad remaster but there is room for improvements, mainly fixing some driver issues (as far as i am able to judge) and some custom settings are in a high demand. The classic mode is apparently still with high performance issues, so another thing in need of improvements.

Crosmando: Are they gonna do Chronicles and Last Revelation too?
Good question, so far there is no PC version of those i do consider sufficient: So console only.

Ancient-Red-Dragon: I just watched a youtube video which confirms the fact that they censored Pierre's jacket in these "Tomb Raider Remastered" games.

Remastering is not supposed to include the addition of new censorship, yet these butchered games do exactly that anyway. What a ripoff!
I do not enjoy any censorhip, however... i guess just by adding a "bra" they was able to decrease the age requirement of "higher than achievable by humans (need a demon for it)", down to 17-18+. It is simply a part of the societies moral views anyone will have to adapt to it which is nowadays way more harsh than in the past. In the past a rating of 16+ was possible but nowadays, if the bra is removed it can lead to a complete removal of a game on the most important platforms and even with a bra it is actually 17+ in many cases. We have many crisis in todays societies... and the peoples need something to "put their morals on it", in a time full of war and social injustices... so the human body, especially females (males may care less) is now the perfect target.

Xeshra: As far as i am able to detect, Windows got a driver issue or maybe just a setting issue. This is a problem with the game, not with the OS and maybe not even the driver. Either the dev is updating the game soon or maybe the driver may become updated as soon as AMD/Nvidia is tracking down the issue.

Linux is on different drivers, high level drivers it seems, not really challenging but the correct settings i assume. Most likely the dev simply did not care the Windows port a lot because the collection was based on the classic console version and has been ported over to the newest consoles. Some consoles (Steam deck) are using a Linux based OS, so... magically it is using the correct specs it seems.
avatar
rojimboo: I'm not sure I agree, though this seems to be like the blind man leading the blind man when it comes to either of us talking about drivers, OSes and graphics APIs :)

At which point can you say it's the difference between the OS, or just "drivers and settings"? If the drivers are inherent and specific to the OS, can't you say that OS A runs a game better than OS B? Linux works better than Windows? What do you mean it's not the OS? For all practical purposes, it basically is, even if it's just the graphics drivers (which it probably isn't).

Also, Steam Deck is not a console. There are significant differences to Playstations and Xboxes and so on. And no, none of those run a freely available Linux distro, unlike the Deck (that you are free to install any desktop distro you like). So no, you can't just say that it works on Linux desktop because the Windows PC port was bad, but the console ones are good due to Linux, when they don't even do that.
Not that i am in search for an agreement, i may even agree to disagree or whatever.

I can just tell you my personal experience with this game, and so far... i was not able to detect any issues on my Windows PC considering the "remastered" version. I have smooth frame rate and i am not able to reproduce the issues some reviewers apparently got on the Windows version, so i am confused.

However.... and i think it is same on every version: The "classic mode" is a bit juddery, although, according to my performance-tool usually running smooth in 60 FPS with rather few inconsistencies. It seems like it is actually 30 FPS on the external framerate (Playstation mode) but the internal framerate is still 60 (or up, according to the PC settings). Most likely "on purpose" as this is basically very close to the original feeling.

Not any settings available, so... the game is simply matching the PC settings. If there is any "failure in detection"... it can become a issue... as there is simply no way (except forcing it by driver panel) manually adjusting it.

At least on Windows, the game seems to run on OPEN GL on any version (no matter Linux or Windows) and clearly... Open GL is actually a Linux-standard, not truly meant to work great on Windows. It can still run great on Windows but it is very dependent on driver and even hardware-support. If this support is bad i assume it can cause many issues... but Linux in this case is surely in a advantage.

I dont know why they made this decision using this actually dated API (rarely used on games, nowadays Vulkan is the new standard) but with the correct material it surely works fine on Windows too.

In general, the experience is smooth and using the "Start button" a near seamless switch between Classic and Remastered is possible, surely a fun feature. In general a good game in a good shape, i enjoy playing it.

As for the lighting, it looks like the difference is simply caused by the originals using pre-baked lighting and the remasters use actual lighting. That being said, the pre-baked lighting does still have its charm, even if the one in the remasters is objectively better.

And yet, a game like Baldur's Gate 3 for example gets slapped with an M rating without issues instead of being AO. But a single 2D image of a woman on the back of the jacket of a single character in a 20+ year old game is the difference between M and AO rating? I smell something fishy, and it's not the fish.

I guess because Larian Studios was acting wise by using the current "moralistic stream" which we usually call "woke" in order to demand a "freedom of expression", even in a sexual way. The "good old games" are lacking this sort of moral... so they can not be considered friendly with the current social environment.

Awesome news but the price is a bit too high for my taste
The reason i got it for the highest "full price, possibly worldwide" is because it has been released DRM free at the launch-date.

Yet, in my mind it is totally worth it, even for those we actually do not seem to feel "fairness" and in this term not very "woke" at all.

Don't forget that it's three games. With the preorder it was 7.67$ each, if you own the original.

There will be sales :)

"Nexus mods removed the mod that deletes that warning message from the Tomb Raider remaster
Nexus has been becoming a mod policing, totalitarian hellhole for a while now. So sadly, nothing shocking and to be honest, I fully expected this cycle to happen with the warning.

ModDB is not far behind, usually just parroting whatever Nexus does when it comes to policing.

But there are some alternatives which host mods taken down by the mainstream platforms.

Tomb Raider got its roots on the console. At some point they made a half assed DOS (very bad OS in my mind) version and used some lazy port for it... up the the point the engine has been changed and PC games was slowly becoming more popular. Even the addons was not included... and no pad support...
With a little bit of feeling for quality this is not hard to become noticed... no need for a deep "dev story".

Just need to play the old PC version and compare it on "how it plays on the old consoles"... as a console lover i have to say "what a mess on PC". However, those who had never played the console originals... they may not notice it.

With the remaster all platforms are more or less equal now, as it will play the way it has been intended on any platform.

Oh indeed, i was playing PCs too... my first PC had a Win 95 on it and my first GPU ever was a Voodoo. It has been used to play another kind of games "Anno games... Civ games (however... so far no Civ game ever was so lovely made such as Civ II on the old Playstation... but only those playing it may ever understand), Dark Reign 2, Freespace 2 a legendary space shooter (yes i had the original PC box with CD) and so on... games that are finely "adapted" to the unique possibilities of PCs (especially by using a mouse). Tomb Raider was not one of them but nowadays... all the PCs can be adapted to any "style"... PCs are now truly "multi-use-machines".

On the Playstation, many stuff has been pre rendered or pre baked in order to save ressources, as it was very limited on handling active rendering. However... on many games it was done with so much love it actually was some kind of art count that may even surpass what is achievable purely by tech count. Quality simply means how much heart someone puts into it... not necessarily "how much tech is available", so quality is the sum of many different kind of quantities in a somewhat "absolute" outcome.

Sometimes, a human need some limitations in order to become creative... If we make it "to easy", humans may become lazy and the art may slowly die. Art is like some sort of energy, that can be seen if something is truly "well made".

Just sad GoG is still missing the 2 newest Tomb Raiders (Rise of the Tomb Raider even available DRM free on EGS) but at least the oldies are here.
