Big in Japan.

Throne of Darkness, a fast-paced ARPG where you slaughter hordes of exotic demons with your well-trained samurai, is now available DRM-free, exclusively on GOG.com.

Combine powerful warlords with demonic influence and trouble will soon follow. When the most prominent shogun surrenders to darkness, only a handful of heroic samurai is left standing against the evil that now threatens to engulf the land of Yamato. Seven distinct classes, tons of neat loot, and massive demonic armies that can't wait to meet your mouse pointer make this a real treasure for lovers of Diablo-style gameplay.

Leroux: For some reason I always thought it was an MMORPG ... So it actually had an offline single player mode?

I can think of several (including all kinds of subgenres and crossovers, although "notable" is a matter of preference, of course, not all of them are that popular or good):

Dungeon Master 1 & 2
Buck Rogers series (SSI Goldbox)
Faery Tale Adventure 1 & 2
Hero Quest (the MS-DOS board-game adaptation)
Drakensang 1 & 2 (The Dark Eye)
Dragon Age 2 & Inquisition
Mass Effect series
Deus Ex: Human Revolution & Mankind Divided
Alpha Protocol
Dungeon Siege series
Sword Coast Legends
Kingdoms of Amalur
Fable: The Lost Chapters
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic
Demonicon (The Dark Eye)
Mars War: Logs
The Technomancer
Game of Thrones RPG
Mordheim: City of the Damned (Warhammer)
Venetica
Avencast: Rise of the Mage
Ember
Prince of Qin
Gorasul: The Legacy of the Dragon (thanks for reminding me, nightcraw1er.488!)
Technomage: Return to Eternity
DeathSpank series
FATE series
Costume Quest 2
South Park: The Stick of Truth

The Fall of the Dungeon Guardians
Knights of the Chalice (combat is closely related to turn-based D&D, think Goldbox or Dark Sun)
Frayed Knights: The Skull of S'makh-Daon (looks like a Might & Magic / Wizardry parody)
Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome (no idea if it's any good, style looks similar to Ultima VII)
Kivi's Underworld (Soldak Entertainment)
Nethergate: Resurrection (Spiderweb Software)
Fortune Summoners
LISA - The Painful RPG
You'll put War Logs on here but not Bound by Flame, the game by the same Dev in a fantasy setting?
Nice release! :)

I don't claim completeness for the list, but you're right. I keep confusing it with Lords of the Fallen for some reason, which is more of a Dark Souls clone. But Bound by Flame is the one that aims to be a bit like Dragon Age, isn't it? Well, I guess seeing as I didn't discriminate against action games, the Dark Souls series could be listed as well. Maybe also Of Orcs and Men, if I listed Game of Thrones? And Faery - Legends of Avalon, as a JRPG. And then there's also Dragon's Dogma.

Klumpen0815: I have the European version and it's still buggy as hell and very badly balanced.
I also own the European version.
I remember the poor balance. I cannot recall it to be such buggy, at least containing bugs worth to remember.
But they're just memories.

Hellgate London has single player. Your memories are probably due to the heavy promotion of the multi player mode. I remember myself searching information about offline play before ordering it.

Leroux:
Your list contains a lot of great titles.
How could I have forgotten Drakensang!

I had enjoyed Gorasul, but it was impossible to finish it. I think it had major memory leaks. I remember the game was freezing on the same map, no matter the system or the version (English or German). I'd like to play it to the end someday. Have you finished it?

EDIT: A few more action-RPGs, not the best ones, but I think worth playing:
Loki
Silverfall + Earth Awakening
Dawn of Magic 1+2

I tend to believe GOG has rejected them though.
Loki and Silverfall had been DRM-free on Dotemu, but at some point they were removed from its catalog. Since I was waiting for a GOG release, I missed the chance to buy Silverfall. Fortunately, I bought Loki.
Both Dawn of Magic games were DRM-free as part of an old Groupees bundle. They may be found DRM-free on FireFlowerGames.

No, I remember being interested in it but I never managed to get hold of a copy.

Love seeing this game on here, I still have my disks. Is this the 1.2.18 version, or does it have the needed 1.3.2 beta patch?
avatar
Chacranajxy: Lol, well this was a mistake. Tried playing the game, and yeah... it feels awful to play. The animation is choppy, the lack of sound effects when attacking is extremely offputting, and it just feels... ghetto. Definitely hasn't aged well.
avatar
Leroux: What do you mean by "lack of sound effects when attacking"? Too few or none at all? I watched a gameplay video on YouTube and it had sound effect on attacking. Is there something wrong with the GOG version perhaps?
You just hear the sword cutting through the air, but there's no sound to indicate that you're actually hitting the enemy. The satisfying "thwack" sounds in Diablo-style games is a pretty major part of the experience. Or really... I guess pretty much any game. Like, it just feels wrong without it.

paladin181: Been waiting on this one for years. This is so awesome.

paladin181: Dead, unsupported, security risk operating system is dead. If you go online with XP these days, you deserve the horrible things that will eventually happen to your system.
XP is fine in a VM machine, or on a dual boot to be used offline for running older programs, but anybody relying on XP as their major online OS is asking for a world of hurt.
I swear, the hard line XP users are becoming almost cult like in their worship of XP. It was a great OS, but ti's time is past,it has a rapidly shrinking base of people who use it as a primary OS, and it is foolish to expect GOG to continue to support it.

I have a dual-boot setup with Linux primary and a 100% offline Windows XP which isn't too uncommon.

It is not foolish wanting to know whether this store's package of a Windows XP game from 2001 does actually run on the OS it was made for and even if not, they could just as well include the original files what they already neglected to do with Turok, Grandia 2, Noctropolis and probably others as well.

Leroux: For some reason I always thought it was an MMORPG ... So it actually had an offline single player mode?
avatar
nightcraw1er.488: Yes, H:London had single player. It was extremely repetitive, i.e. there were two graphics sets, the underground and the city, these repeated over and over. Character animation was shockingly bad. Enemies seemed to number 3 or 4 different ones, though they changed color occasionally. I couldn't figure out if there was a storyline. Quests were "go here, get that" or "go here, kill that". It wasn't the worst game ever made, but really wasn't a good one, or one I would ever go back to.

avatar
Leroux: Dragon Age 2
avatar
nightcraw1er.488: Another game I would never go back to or pay for again. Dreadful repetitive, lack of enthusiasm money grab based on DA: Origins success.

avatar
Leroux: Hero Quest (the MS-DOS board-game adaptation)
avatar
nightcraw1er.488: There are a couple of free versions out there, fan made ones with extra missions and such like. I can dig out the links if you like.

A final thing, does anyone remember a game called Gorasul: Legend of The Dragon? Had it years and never got round to playing it. That looks like a good RPG. And the Pools of Radiance later release was pretty good (ok you need to have the patch otherwise the uninstall doesn't work, and play solo player, but good fun and could have been so much more.).
I 100% agree on Hellgate:London. They made a huge mistake in pretty much using random graphics. I expected to be fighting demons in the streets of London with recognizable landrmarks, instead about half the game was spent in tunnels and subways that looked just like the tunnel and subway you have just been in, and the streets were incredibly generic.Thye were a few specific landmarks, like the interior of the British Museum, but the game was a huge disappointment in that regard.
And the gameplay was repetitive with less then stellar AI for the monsters.
All in all a good idea for a game horribly executed.

The XP market has shrunk to the point where it does not pay for GOG to support it. GOG is a business, you can't expect a business to cater to customer base that is too small to be profitable.
If GOG lists a game as not being XP compatible, then buy it at your own risk. I don't get why the idea that some of the tweaks that GOG makes to get a XP game to run on a modern OS might well make it unplayable on XP is so hard for people to understand.

Did you even read what you quoted before?
The market share of WinXP is still bigger than the ones of Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Vista, Mac and Linux.

I don't suppose you'd be interested in the original 2001 retail version of Throne of Darkness? I still have that lying around, complete with box, manual and discs. Used condition though, with some wear and tear on the cardboard, and I fear it's the German version. Official SysReqs are Win 95/98/2000/ME/NT 4.0.

Thanks for the offer but I stopped buying physical since I need all of the few space I have in my apartment for musical instruments and sports gear, big boxes are especially out of the question and I guess the German version was cut anyway.
