Independence Daily.

<span class="bold">The Westport Independent</span>, a press-censorship simulator, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac and Linux.

A newspaper is like a living organism. It feeds on its immediate ecosystem of newsworthy events, metabolizes them, then in turn provides conversation fodder for all those stale watercooler discussions. But once it outlives its function, it is gradually left to die.

The Westport Independent is fighting for its life, and as the editor-in-chief you need to ensure it goes out with a bang. Carefully choose what to publish, what to hush, and who to side with. You have the power to both cause a riot and subdue one, sedate the public or ruffle some high-up feathers. And what about those popular gossip pieces that everyone pretends not to read on their way to work? Run them and print money, or swap them out for that thought-provoking editorial — thus securing your writers' appreciation and future unemployment. Whatever your decisions, they will make headlines and help shape a totalitarian nation. You better write that down, son.

Manage the perils and the press-tige of running <span class="bold">The Westport Independent</span>, DRM-free on GOG.com.
Hmm, interesting, wishlisted for now. Sadly the situation of this game is all too real in Poland right now with Kaczynski and his administration trying to muzzle all media until they become his governments' lapdog.

Daliz: Papers, Please vibes are strong. Therefore I'll skip.
avatar
omega64: Why exactly?
Because I didn't like Papers, Please. I really wanted to but the gameplay itself was just annoying and boring. I might check out a gameplay video of this game at some point but it doesn't look too promising.

Tarhiel: You must be new here... well, judging by your registration year, you might have heard about this:.
In 2012, GOG decided to sell (publish?) also indie games, later on they added in AAA titles with Age of Wonders 3 and other games, thus cementing their role on the market as alternative to Steam.

It is just strange you´re asking this question only now(!) after so many not old (and some not even good) games were released here.

DeadlyRamon: I think Witcher 2, released in 2011, was the first new AAA title that GOG carried, well before Age of Wonders 3 (released in 2014).
so age of wonders is AAA?

then age empires from microsoft must be AAA aswell
and most of EA larger games like the command and conquer aswell

so basically most of the retails i bought in the good old days were AAA games ?
most of these were 79 to 139 guilders back then

hfl 79, hfl 89, hfl 99, hfl109, hfl 119,and hfl 129: for games like red alert, age of empires, commandos call of duty, fallout 1 and 2, baldurs gate 1 and 2 and many more.

Treasure: Anyways, I'm sorry I brought politics into this (hope you weren't offended) but I just wanted to say why I thought the term still applies in that case. Also, fyi, I haven't heard of this Yakety Sax -maybe I should check it out...
But this is not just about politics, it is about playing TROPICO!!!

Fairfox: Edit: No idea what this meant. I drank too much girl drink tonite.
Relevant. :)

markrichardb: Was just thinking of Republica Times. It's still available for free.

As someone who ridiculed Papers Please at first then thoroughly enjoyed being a cog in the fascist regime , i'm gonna hold off having any opinions on what looks like a simple reading game till I hear some reviews.

"Cause no troobal. '

nvm. just watched the stream on it and its such a rip off of papers please, including art assets, looks and free mini game that I dont want to support the devs. plus is boring as heck

I first thought like everyone else that it was a new Paper's Please a gave I ADORE. Even though it looks heavily influenced by Paper's Please authors similar title and that title is available to play for free albeit online, I still jumped instantly on this one :) I'm sure it will be on sale one day but I loved Paper's Please so much although I wish it had some randomising factor in it or people could edit their own scenarios. :)

When I lived in America, I worked for a small newspaper company and they did the same. Even though some information was true they would not print it in the newspaper. They also do it here in Japan, but much more than you would expect. Some information is even changed to protect some company's reputation.

I think video games have evolved over the years. They are not just "fun" anymore. To me they have become art and allow the developers to express opinions especially with Indie games. I don't think this game is a copy of Papers Please, but an inspiration by it and continues the new trend of expression. It looks interesting to me probably because I have worked at newspaper companies before, so I'll buy it someday when it is on sale, but I'd be happy to support developers to support this genre of game because maybe we'll get more games like these, but much more improved.
Goodness do I regret buying this title at full price. It only has "12 weeks" and it does not take too long to completely finish it all. Around 60-70 minutes approx and it's done. I can't believe that it all that was in it.

Paper's Please is FAAAAR better and far more depth because at the moment I would say it is FAR from finished.

I thought it had FAR more than what it did. That will teach me. There were not many reviews about for me to go on. $11.49 no way.... maybe $5 because it is just SO short !

:( :(

The dev really needs to add a LOT more into it. It has a LOT of potential but greatly falls short for content :(

I sincerely hope the dev adds more content and we don't have to purchase it as DLC.
Also just tried to replay it to see how much it changes, I saw the same cases, not in the same order so I would say the replay value is also low from what I have seen.

It's best to watch new release games on YouTube before buying them. Then you can judge if it is worth buying or wait until it goes on sale.

But it doesn't play at all like Papers Please. Aside from the general look and the government vs rebels milieu -- which would be shared by many political games -- the gameplay is different. You are not looking for inconsistencies in people's stories and passports (like is the main gameplay device in Papers Please), but instead you're looking to spin the truth and influence public opinion, while keeping an eye on your newspaper's finances.

Stylistically, I feel this game owes more to the old classic "Floor 13" ( http://www.mobygames.com/game/floor-13 ) in its puzzle-like management of a team of professionals than to Papers Please. "Floor 13", way before "Papers, Please", also featured keeping a balancing act between pleasing the government and several underground Illuminati-like factions.

edit: it does look close to "The Republia Times", a free game by Lucas Pope, but not to "Papers, Please".

Way ahead of you there Brokenbull,
There were none I could find. Everything was from the Alpha. This is why I thought the full version must have a lot more. I always check youtube playthroughs before purchasing. What I should have done here is just wait until there WAS a playthrough rather than buy it :(

Floor 13 has FAR more content than Westport. I would recommend people to play Floor 13 as well as the free online one the author of Paper's Please wrote, the republica game.....so sorry the name has slipped my memory.
