Independence Daily.

<span class="bold">The Westport Independent</span>, a press-censorship simulator, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac and Linux.

A newspaper is like a living organism. It feeds on its immediate ecosystem of newsworthy events, metabolizes them, then in turn provides conversation fodder for all those stale watercooler discussions. But once it outlives its function, it is gradually left to die.

The Westport Independent is fighting for its life, and as the editor-in-chief you need to ensure it goes out with a bang. Carefully choose what to publish, what to hush, and who to side with. You have the power to both cause a riot and subdue one, sedate the public or ruffle some high-up feathers. And what about those popular gossip pieces that everyone pretends not to read on their way to work? Run them and print money, or swap them out for that thought-provoking editorial — thus securing your writers' appreciation and future unemployment. Whatever your decisions, they will make headlines and help shape a totalitarian nation. You better write that down, son.

Manage the perils and the press-tige of running <span class="bold">The Westport Independent</span>, DRM-free on GOG.com.

andresf77: But it doesn't play at all like Papers Please. Aside from the general look and the government vs rebels milieu -- which would be shared by many political games -- the gameplay is different. You are not looking for inconsistencies in people's stories and passports (like is the main gameplay device in Papers Please), but instead you're looking to spin the truth and influence public opinion, while keeping an eye on your newspaper's finances.

Stylistically, I feel this game owes more to the old classic "Floor 13" ( http://www.mobygames.com/game/floor-13 ) in its puzzle-like management of a team of professionals than to Papers Please. "Floor 13", way before "Papers, Please", also featured keeping a balancing act between pleasing the government and several underground Illuminati-like factions.

edit: it does look close to "The Republia Times", a free game by Lucas Pope, but not to "Papers, Please".
Yes, I meant a review on YouTube for the final version and not the alpha version. Usually after release reviews will be posted on YouTube within a few days. Northernlion posted one a few days ago.

styggron: Floor 13 has FAR more content than Westport. I would recommend people to play Floor 13 [...]
Sure. Floor 13 is a great game. Unfortunately, it's also an insanely hard game. It's too difficult to know how to solve some of the situations, or when to use the "noisy" tactics of gunning down or ransacking a place. I don't think I've ever managed to avoid getting a visit from... what was the name of the fellow who paid you a visit when you made one mistake too many? :)

I wouldn't know about content, since I haven't finished Westport yet. The pro-government campaign seems too easy. It's clear the meat of the game lies in the pro-rebel campaign, which I haven't managed to win yet.

Floor 13 is indeed hard but so much better.
Seriously you have not finished Westport yet ? I finished it very fast and upon replay the SAME news items came up albeit in a different order and I gave up after Week 3 as it was all the same.

Pro Gov is the point of the game in Westport and as you say DEAD easy no challenge really. Before I wipe it off the HardDrive, I'll give the oposite a go but I don't fancy it's chances. It needs FAR more content, depth and options.

Fairfox: Gosh, this game looks so boring. I apologize to people that are really into it; s'just my opinion and it carries no more weight than anybody else's (although honestly, it should), but yawnarama city. And that color scheme makes me want to throw this shoe - this one! I'm holding it right now! - at people down on the street.

Don't down-vote :'( <3.
We'll let it slide this time.

Hmmm... to me it's clear the point of the game is pro-REBEL (or anti-government). Pro-government is too easy, and indeed very fast to complete, but when I tried pro-rebel, very soon the government was threatening me, suspicion levels for journalists started rising, Frank (the rebel sympathizer) unexpectedly took days off, and finally I was shut down and arrested :(
Gosh, this game looks so boring.
To each his/her own. I find politically minded games, spy games, etc, very intriguing. I loved Papers, Please. I also enjoyed abandonware classics such as Shadow President and Hidden Agenda (which you should avoid: it's entirely black & white). There is enough room for every kind of game to exist :)

That's very interesting. I thought it was pro Gov. LOL Very interesting.
If you've got a compatible Android device and you don't mind installing Amazon's app, this game is free on Amazon Underground. I think it's US only at the moment.

This is the only game I have ever bought on GoG that I regret and would love to return it for a refund. Oh well.......... next time, I will wait for a youtube FULL review and a full play through. I just loved Floor 13 and Paper's Please so much I just pounced on this one..............that will teach me :)

It still has its merits but as I wrote on the dedicated thread for the game, needs FAR more content and depth. :)
