Nice! A good game, I like it more than the sequel (at least with the mouselook mode which this version apparently also contains).

Errr, really? I'd say it is a cult classic with devoted followers, but that's all. It is nowhere near as influential as, say, Super Mario Bros, Baldur's Gate or Morrowind.

Anyway, a good game, especially for the atmosphere. As long as you can get over the rather crude pseudo-3D graphics (and why wouldn't you).

Thanks but if you could also port to Linux this would be amazing.

JudasIscariot: The Enhanced Edition gets rid of a lot of the 90's clunkiness regarding the UI so it's like a brand new game now :)

In any case, the first System Shock has tons of secret doors so it would behoove you to look for them like you would in an old-school shooter, read the logs for clues, and check your mini-map :)

Also, watch out for berserk patches :)

javihyuga: Is the enhanced edition a renaming of the portable version or has ND added something of their own?
It's a mix between System Shock Portable as some of the modders are involved and some Night Dive fixes.

Take a look here for specifics:

Grargar: Here.
I don't know if I am multireplying, but nothing shows up :(

Thank you very much my good sir! GOG should thank you for another sold copy ;)

Klumpen0815: ftfy :-/

I'll buy when it's available for Linux or at least WinXP, which probably won't happen.

mk47at: Oh. Sorry about that. You're right. It's even worse than Windows only. But there is still the posibilty that it could work on older Windows version if they used another compiler.

Edit: spelling.

Edit2: Is anyone adventurous enough to test if it is at least compatible with Wine?
I tested an internal build with Wine on Mint 17.2. This is the stock WINE configuration that comes with the OS, nothing sourced or added on my own and it worked out of the box. Your results may vary with different Wine versions etc. etc.

Grargar ninja'd you, but thanks for the answer. Downloading right now :)
What an awfully nice lot of extras too! Thank you for this release!
Cool!

Right?
Seeing this released here = GOOD NEWS!

Getting it for "free" because I got a refund on all those pinata gift keys = BEST NEWS!

Would be nice if gog could add an additional Super Ultra Classic Redux Version (that being the floppy version with the awesome midi rendition of the System Shock theme during the intro intact)

Same here on Ubuntu but no music is playing. I can hear audio effects though. Any idea what could be the problem?

cheers

Gnostic: I remember quite a number of GoGer are clamoring about System Shock.

So any good things I should know about it to overcome its age?
1. Use it with the new mouselook and remapped (WASD) controls. The original controls were quite clumsy, even clumsier than Ultima Underworld 1-2 if you have played those games. Those integrated mods make it play much more like a modern 3D game.

2. Get over a bit crude graphics, like enemies and objects which look like cardboard cutouts. If you are fine with e.g. Duke 3D or Blood level graphics, then this shouldn't be an issue.

3. Don't enable story timer in the beginning (I think it is the "story difficulty" setting, don't maximize it). At least I enjoy these kinds of games more when I can advance at my own time and don't have to fear of seeing Game Over because I didn't play through all the levels fast enough. Naturally there may still be some instances where you are in a hurry, but that is different...

I think the game has a great atmosphere and setting, I enjoyed replaying it through one or two years ago. And I think it has less gameplay annoyances than the sequel.

Ps. I'm surprised this is apparently not running in DOSBox, but is a native(?) Windows version? I have no idea what that means in practice unless they had the source code and made the Windows version from that or something, but I would have been quite fine even if they had just re-released System Shock Portable. At least there is maybe some incentive to buy this now even over SSP.

(I originally played my CD version a long time ago, then replayed some time ago the Portable version.)

Hey guys, I will host our special guests on GOG.com Twitch tomorrow, so check out twitch.tv/gogcom at 4 PM GMT / 18:00 CEST for us. I'll probably mute my microphone for the duration of roundtable session, so the playthrough will be done in the background, not disturbing the conversation of devs.

Hope you will like it! :)

JudasIscariot: I had the CD version back in the day :P
I still have the CD version...
Whoops, just go two identical newsletters GOG?

"System Shock premieres on GOG.com - the legend is back, better than ever."
"Your wish is our command - System Shock premieres on GOG.com."

A really intersting news. System Shock was one of the most requested games. Cheers on Night Dive Studios, specialized in bringing back old classics.
