In the press:

Stronghold Crusader II was a rare game that I got lost in. I started playing and before I knew it, it was six hours later. Who can resist a game about castle building, economy raising, and taking on large castles full of troops and hazards? Especially when you can soften up the numbers by launching diseased animals over castle walls.--Dark Station

The first thing that you'll notice when making your initial tentative steps into Stronghold Crusader II is the level of detail that's been invested into making its world as joyous to behold for the player as possible. --Game Revolution

JudasIscariot: It is Windows-only but I can always try to run it under WINE 1.7.53 and report back :D

Ueber: Are there any news about the wine compability? :)
Initial tests on Wine 1.8-rc1 are not looking too good :/ I can install the game, launch it, watch the Firefly logo and the intro with the heavy breathing crusader fighting some guy with two swords and then I just get a black screen with the game's version number in the lower left corner.

Also, the game requires .NET 4.0 or later (which i already have) and may need some DirectX 9.0 tweaks. What they are, I am not sure as I am not really an expert on running games via Wine :)

Like I said, the game may run well under a better system, mine's 3 years old so there is that and I haven't really tried installing anything via winetricks related to directx :)
How's the game? Its got a mixed review score on Steam at the moment.

Niggles: Surprised neither of originals have a sale discount at all?
They were both part of the multiple-day long sale that was going on early- to mid-November.

Matruchus: What I don't get is why are Stronghold 2 and Stronghold Legends still missing from gogs catalog.

mistermumbles: As far as I understand it is that while Firefly Studios owns the IP itself 2K actually owns those two particular games still. The rights of the games may eventually revert back to Firefly as it happened with the original Stronghold and Crusader, but who knows when that may be.

While I don't mind the addition of SC2 to GOG, I also would much rather see S2 and SL here.
This...

And what is funny you can actually get both of them DRM free via physical disc if you get the Stronghold Collection. I have it just for those two, completely DRM free... it's even advertised on the box go figure.

Just bought SC2 + DLC, plan to download/play tomorrow and will probably review after.

I bought the regular version plus DLC's for a little over $40 bucks. That's a bargain to me, considering that this game is considered the revival of the Stronghold series. I played 3 for a short while, but during that time I found that not only was it buggy, but for a game that was mostly castle management and didn't need to look like a triple A shooter, they poured too much into the graphics and too little into the gameplay. My desktop couldn't run it after ten minutes of play time.

With Crusader 2 however I have been able to run it fairly smoothly thus far, and for hours on end. I am loving this game to pieces. There are only two complaints that I have about this game:

#1) The space bar no longer sends you into top-down mode, which is a bummer because now you have to awkwardly maneuver with the mouses middle key in order to rotate around a building to place a castle wall.

#2) [This may be a technical error GOG can look into] For some very peculiar reason, it will not save my games. While I am loaded into an instance of SCr2 I can access my saved games no problem. Once I exit the game and come back to it I have to create a whole new profile and my saves are no longer there.

For that, I give Stronghold Crusader 2 4 out of 5 stars, and I would say its definitely a 5 star game if GOG could fix that one little issue :)

Hi,

I encountered the same problem and figured out that installing d3dcompiler_43 via winetricks or similiar seems to solve the issue.
