An Epic Adventure at Sea

Sea Dogs, a mixture of RPG, action, trading, strategy, and seafaring, is available now for Windows, DRM-free exclusively on GOG.com!

As you soak in the refreshing breeze of a sunset at sea, the galley heaves wave to wave in anticipation of distant gifts beyond the horizon. There are no two ways about it, Sea Dogs is heavily inspired by Sid Meier's Pirates!, and bears plenty of resemblance to the much more modern Mount & Blade series. Precisely none of that is a bad thing, as it remains one of the best pirate simulations out there. Make an allegiance, or not, and become a true scallywag, a rogue, a rapscallion of the sea! You'll wander tropical towns scattered across the Caribbean, hire your crew, make a hefty profit off your cargo, and then set sail once more to complete your contracts. Or just pirate away. The world is open, and the choices are yours.

Sail the sun-bathed seas in Sea Dogs, available now DRM-free exclusively on GOG.com!

mrgreen9705: Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales (2006)
The true sequel to Sea Dogs. It´s story is roughly related to that of Sea Dogs.

Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned Ships (2009)

Ixamyakxim: Had never heard of these ones! How close were they to the gameplay of PotC? Same detail to building a character? Officers to alter ship stats? Land exploration and questing?

Also, any idea of the publisher? I'm curious so I can gauge how likely it is to maybe show up here (also I'm assuming it was PC?).

I'd LOVE to try out a "new" versions of these games!
I have only played "Pirates of Caribbean" from 2003 and Sea Dogs. The gameplay seems to be very close to that of PotC, but with better graphics, multiple playable characters and overall improvements.

All of the games where interestingly developed by Russian Akella. The first two games where published by Bethesda and the third by 1C Company, Playlogic. The forth installment was released by Playlogic. All PC except PotC which was both PC and original Xbox.

PS: There is actually a fan-based sequel to Sea Dogs called "Sea Dogs: Return Of The Legend" only released in Russia and the CIS.
arrrrrr shiver me DRMbers! I don't even recall this game. It's amazing how gog.com can give life to the "also-theres" of yester-year that may be forgotten. solid games that might not have sold well and then were unfortunately forgotten. not saying anything about this game's quality of course as I've never played it, but it's nice to see.

Publishers:

PoTC - Bethesda/Ubisoft, developer Akella, rights might be held by Disney, though

AoP: Caribbean Tales - 1C Company/Playlogic, developer Akella, rights status unknown

AoP: CoAS - Playlogic, developer Akella, rights status unknown

If any of our detectives can find anything about who owns the rights, maybe GOG can bring them back.

There is also another title in the series:

Pirates Odissey: To Each His Own

This was released only in the Russian territories. Seems that an english version was/is in works, but no news about it so far.

I really enjoyed this game except for the clunky third person control when you're in town. The voice acting for the NPC are hilarious.

I was really looking to the sequel, but instead they made Pirates of the Caribbean for Disney and changed the gameplay.
Thanks for all the info mrgreen and wolfsrain! That actually sounds a bit promising and maybe worth digging into.
Guns still loading Captain, awesome release 8).

There are sequels. But I think these were only in Russian.

All of the three main games I have mentioned are available in English.
You shouldn't dismiss Pirates of the Caribbean just because they rushed it in order to cash in on the movie. It is an improvement over Sea dogs and with the "New Horizons" mod it easily becomes one of, if not the best pirate game ever.
Maaan, I really hope they will somehow manage to bring PotC here. I was playing the hell out of it when it came out (funny thing is, I bought it only because I was a kid and naive enough to go for the movie-licensed games like this or Finding Nemo), with my jaw on the groud... The beatiful Caribbean, the sea, the naval battles! The satisfaction when I've managed to defeat and capture stronger ships during the boarding... Even "teleporting" during ship battles was fun, if somewhat of an exploit :D And the soundtrack (especially The Tavern Theme :3:3:3:3)... Actually, the soundtrack on its own would be worth paying a full price!

Too bad that the games like this had sailed away into the sunset, being replaced with a minigame-fest like SMP! or the beatiful-yet-shallow-and-simplistic Black Flag :( But that;s what GOG is for ^^ Thank you, guys!
Looks super awesome and will definitely have to grab it at some point. I wonder if GOG will ever get big enough to support old MMO servers.
There is a relatively small modding scene for the Akella's pirate games. Not gonna mention it here, as i don't believe they want the attention. They do the mods at their own pace, in their free time and they do a nice job. If you really want to find them, you will. I lurk their forums often and i'm amazed of what they've created without having modding tools. Their main pet project is based on PoTC, as it was the most mod friendly, so yeah, would be nice to see GOG bringing it out of oblivion. But the game is a legal nightmare. Publishers: Bethesda and Ubisoft, developer Akella, IP belongs to Disney. So we don't know who has the actual rights, but my guess is only Disney and Akella can agree on bringing it back.
