Action, exploration, discovery, trade, diplomacy. Can you ask for more in a title about the fantasy of space?
How about power? You're in command of a hulking, terrifying star destroyer. You will traverse the outer reaches of space doing what you can to get by - whether it's fending off or hunting pirates, exploring the unknown, mining, or scavenging - all the paths and choices are yours. Your riches can be wisely invested, or spent on a few more guns and a bigger chassis. But the huge universe open before you may just be more than you've bargained for. Just... Try to survive without blowing up everything.

Well, maybe you could also ask for a killer soundtrack. Done.

Fun fact: Rebel Galaxy is made with the OGRE engine :)

trusteft: What's a similar game in terms of gameplay?
Sid Meier's Pirates from what QA tells me :)

Chickenator.108: Game looks very interesting. I've got a small question: will the MAC version also be available on GoG?

Currently the mac version is offered on Steam, but I would prefer buying it here.

So, is it not sold here due to technical or legal issues?
There is a Mac version available :) We will be updating the page shortly :)

trusteft: Don't toy with me! :)
Well, I am taking a build home with me to see if it runs on WINE so I'll see for myself :D

marlowe221: Hey GOG!

Thanks for getting this game on the site, but I can't buy it!

It's rejecting my credit card (same one I always use here, plenty of credit on it, etc.)

Servers are busy, eh?
Check with your bank, perhaps?

JudasIscariot: Check with your bank, perhaps?
avatar
marlowe221: I was able to buy the game through PayPal with the same credit card that GOG was rejecting. I wan't mad or anything, just wanted to let someone know what was happening.

Can't wait to fire up this game tonight!!
Thanks, I'll pass it on to the right people :)

yyahoo: I actually encountered the same thing last night. 2 credit cards that never had any problems in the past (and specifically mention no foreign transaction fees as part of my benefits). I ended up having to use paypal to make my purchase before the weekend promo ended...
Like I said, check with your bank or check your online statement :)

musteriuz: I've pre-wishlisted this one. Lots of mentions of Freelancer in this thread. Do any of you guys have a "complete" version of that game? In the version I have I can't trade with the planets populated by apes or androids, *sigh*.
What? I have played Freelancer back in the day to completion and I never saw planets populated by apes or androids. Did you mod your version or am I missing something here.

eiii: Which makes it even less fun that the game does not come with a Linux version. :(
avatar
bssybeep: because playing a game in all 3 dimensions is a PITA.
avatar
eiii: Not when it's implemented properly. Archimedean Dynasty is a good example or maybe Descent.
Hopefully it will as I don't feel like building 64-bit WINE right now :P
avatar
shmerl: Do they plan a Linux release? The game looks interesting, but without the Linux version I'm not going to buy it.

avatar
shmerl: Please let us know how it went :)
Well....

I might have to build a 64-bit WINE version for this one and see how it goes. I mean the game itself needs DirectX 11 and MSVC++ 2012 but I am worried about the 64-bit versions of such :/

If there was a way to have two different versions of Wine without having to do a WoW 64 build, it would be great :D

shmerl: I thought you were talking about Rebel Galaxy (isn't it DX9 based?). That's what I see in the game card:
DirectX: Version 9.0b

DX11 support in Wine isn't ready - otherwise I would have tried to play Witcher 3 already ;) Not sure what will happen first - CDPR will decide to wake up and release Witcher 3 for Linux, or Wine will implement DX11 support.

shmerl: You can use PlayOnLinux for that. It allows managing many Wine versions (it installs them locally in your home directory). Including 64-bit ones.
I'll try it :) The only issue I have is I don't know what those versions were compiled with and I have no idea how to tell as I am still new at this :)
avatar
JudasIscariot: I'll try it :)
avatar
shmerl: Any success in Wine?
Errrrm no. I mean I got to see the title menu but then something goes pear-shaped 85% into the initial loading bar after pressing "New Game". And yes, this is on a clean prefix.

shmerl: Did you try any native overrides? I'd start with dx9d36 or may be full DirectX 9 if the former doesn't help.
Nah, I just went with the OpenGL renderer, toned down the special effects, set everything else to "Medium", and managed to get the game to play that way. Still likes to crash here and there though :P

hbasold: Would you mind sharing how you exactly set up your installation? I didn't have any success so far in setting up wine correctly, as I ran into several unimplemented features of wine.

Thanks a lot.
This is all done in WINE 1.7.53 compiled from source.

1. A clean .wine prefix. I believe you already know how to preserve your .wine prefixes but if you don't, please let me know :)

2. Make sure you have a patched version of the game. Version 1.03 or higher. To make sure you have the latest version, redownload the installer as it's been updated to the latest version of the game, 1.041.

3. I used "winetricks vcrun2012" as the installer attempts to install this redistributable but has errors in WINE. You can try using some dx3d winetricks but OpenGL is already a Linux standard so I use the OpenGL renderer from the game's launcher.

4. To try and start the game run "wine GoGLauncher.exe" to launch the game's launcher. No, this is not the old GOG Launcher. Instead, it's the devs' way of differentiating between the Steam and GOG versions of the game :)

5. Attached below is my personal Rebel Galaxy launcher set up with version 1.03 of Rebel Galaxy. I have not had a chance to try out version 1.041 so your results may vary.
