Somewhere, over the railroad.

Railroad Tycoon Bundle, which contains the three games that put this sub-genre on track, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com with a 66% launch discount. Buying each game individually grants you a 50% discount, instead.

There is something strangely exhilarating, wondrous, and just downright fun to playing with trains. Could be the fact that trains give the impression of moving on their own, almost like a living organism. Could also be about the unmistakably retro feel of the locomotive, which makes it seem like a relic of a bygone era that is still somehow relevant. Mostly, though, trains are cool because the views associated with riding them are consistently breathtaking.

To capture the magic of what the railroad meant for human transportation, one must go back to 1804, then slowly work their way closer and closer to modern times. Railroad 2: Platinum and Railroad Tycoon 3 are the best express tickets for such a journey, letting you build whole networks of railroad tracks, closely inspect the different types of available train engines, and take in the awesome landscapes. Once you have absorbed and mastered the craft of railroad management, ask the conductor to set course for Sid Meier's Railroads!. It is here that you will put those strategy/simulation skills to the test and try to build the grandest rail empire in the nation, despite your opponents' shrewd efforts to derail you.

Catch a ride to the history and challenges of the locomotive in the Railroad Tycoon Bundle, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 66% bundle discount and the 50% individual discounts will last until April 5, 13:59 BST / 5:59 AM PDT / 8:59 AM EDT.

omega64: The internet is your tutorial.

IronArcturus: I have to disagree. GOG really needs to make sure their older games come with a manual, since not all manuals can be easily found online.
All the games have manuals.
So buying this when I get home. :) I love me some Railroad Tycoon.

After re-reading this thread, I thought the first post said the manuals were missing. Oops! :P

But yeah, in lieu of tutorials, I wonder if there are any on YouTube.

wongheiming: animalmother2105, "Second century" is included.
As a proof of purchased and installed.

IronArcturus: How well do those games run on Win7? Is there a windowed mode?
I'm on Win 10 so cannot say, at least it start up fine.
In game option says windowed mode need 1152 X 864, but my screen is 1366 X 768 so cannot test on that.

Nope, they come with it.

I own all these games on disc. Thinking of re-buying though. Two questions for someone who has bought this already.

Does Railroad Tycoon 3 include the free coast to coast expansion already bundled with it or will we have to go download that separately?

Also I assume they have managed to fix these games as I know Sid Meier's Railroads! and Railroad Tycoon 3 both have major crashing issues on newer OS's. Would be worth a re-buy just for that if they manged to get them running smoothly.

ryanpowell19: Hey guys, if anybody has bought railroad tycoon 3, could you please let us know if it works properly on gog?

I had bought this game only months ago on steam, but I have yet been able to get it to work, and I found out I wasn't the only one having problems with the steam version.

I would love to play this game.
RRT 3 works on Win 10, at least for the few minutes I tried.
Somehow the frame rate is low, not sure is it about hardware T&L, it is disable by default install by gog.
Look for solutions to change this setting outside the game. I heard HW T&L need to disable on newer OS (Vista and newer) years ago but don't want to risk it right now.

Yeah, the PDF manuals are there. But tinyE was originally talking about the lack of tutorials. Those are usually found in-game.

RRT 3 is patched to 1.05, which include coast to coast expansion (patch 1.04).
For the crashing problem, I tried it only a few minutes but the frame rate is low. See my post 52 in this thread.

That's the game where you gotta put your feet up and just chill. No intermissions. I'm so please that these got in here, especially the 3rd one.

Both wrong and correct. RRT 2 has no tutorial but RRT 3 come with them.
I pirated RRT2 in child, and it is not that hard to play without tutorial / manual if you played the original. Surely there is some learning curve.
These games need a Snowpiercer mod. :P

Okay thanks. Might take the plunge then. :)

You mean a gigantic train that somehow runs for years and years on miles of track that's never been repaired? :P

I actually hated that movie. XD

Okay back to the game. #3 looks better but I'm determined to figure out how to at least play #2 since I bought it. :P

Right now I'm just aimlessly laying track which is accomplishing nothing but then for me that's par for the course. :D
